I used to. Then I switched to a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and I rarely get them now. For some people, that is the key.

Perhaps you are eating something that you shouldn't? I get them whenever I eat too much ketchup or too many tomatoes.

Listerine mouthwash + change of diet = cure

I only get them every few months and I find they are more linked to stress than any dietary habits that I can determine. They do suck regardless of the cause, though I am so glad that I get those and not cold sores. Oral herpes would REALLY suck.

No, I do suffer from occassional canker sores though. I find that diet often effects how frequently I get them. Although, a good chomp on the cheek while chewing food usually will bring one on as well.

I have them about as often as you do. And they're annoying as fvck, especially the tongue ones. OTC treatments are only for pain btw, there is no existing treatment to get rid of and/or make them heal faster. Just numbing agents to control the pain for the time you're stuck with them.

These are also not contagious, unlike their external counterparts cold sores, a lot of people get the two mixed up.

I get them sporadically. Injuring my mouth (like biting my cheek accidently) will bring one on, and sometimes things like chewable vitamin c supplements will too. They hurt like hell.

I hate those xxx-caine topical treatments. They sting, then make my tongue numb for a short time. What helps the most is sucking on something with real peppermint oil in it. I used to make mints from an old recipe my grandma had that was basically powdered sugar, butter, and peppermint oil. Sucking on one would dull the pain.

Vitamin D. You may be deficient. Try a natural Vitamin D supplement and see if that helps you at all.

They also can be caused by irritation in the mouth, particularly if you eat somethign acidic and it sits on your teeth for a while. That seems to have been the cause for some of the people in this thread that are referring to eating habits and braces.

Nope, although when my asthma acts up and causes my to cough uncontrollably in my sleep, I tend to bite through my tongue and lips. Colgate Peroxyl works pretty well to heal them when I do that though.

Try getting some sun. Sun = great source of vitamin D.

Ultraviolet rays FTW.

Yeah, the sun is the best natural source. Well, to be detailed, your body creates vitamin D when it interacts with sunlight.

Oh, and leave off the sunblock.

Try Lysine, 500mg, 3 times per day.

Works for mouth ulcers, i.e. when you bite the inside of your lip or something, should work for canker sores too.

It's the amino acid that promotes rebuilding of mouth tissues.

Edit: When you're trying to get rid of one, not just all the time.

I'm using Kanka right now. It's a numbing treatment from Blistex.

I will try taking more Vitamin D because I do not get alot of sun. I'll also try the Lysine treatment tomorrow.

I can't believe there isn't a cure for this. Of all things.

I think things like coffee and spicy foods will make them worse. Drinking lots of water seems to help me too.

I used to get them more often-- I almost never get them now-- only when I bite my cheek hard enough to break the skin.

I guess my best advice is to use mouth wash often and don't tongue them, as tempting as it may be.

Oh, and Kanka was horrible for me-- I used it on a canker sore on my cheek and it made my cheek numb enough that I didn't feel it when I bit it. It was horrible. My cheek swelled up badly enough from me constantly biting it that I couldn't close my teeth without my cheek getting stuck in them. So take care with the Kanka.

There is a cure. Fix the root problem. If the problem is a vitamin D deficiency in your case then eating more Vitamin D WILL fix the problem.

I found that out because I would get canker sores often enough to be bothersome and my doctor handed me a bottle of Vitamin D. I haven't had one since I've been taking the supplement. Several months now.
