Oh, sure, let's hit an animal and then let it suffer to death slowly on the side of the road

Always fucking stop. Who fucking cares if *you* were running late? Make sure the animal is dead, and if it is not, put it out of it's misery.

And spin out because it's wet out? learn to drive a fucking car.

required by law here for dogs to be on a leash at all times.

I don't want to hit an animal, but I am not going to drive stupid to avoid one either.

Yeah, cause animals never get out

Wait? Are you asking me if I would stop hitting (i.e. punching, kicking, etc.) an animal after first contact?

I agree, but I've never hit a Dog. If I did and went to check and saw it suffering I'm not sure I could bring myself to putting it out of it's misery. I'd have hit it on accident and it would be tough to kill a Dog, even if I saw it laying in pain. Not sure how I'd deal with that, it would be hard either way.

If it was not too badly damaged (no guts hanging out, no visible blood, etc...) I'd call the owner and comfort the dog. If it was clearly fucked, I'd kill it in the most humane way possible and then notify the owners. Or, I could just be an asshole and keep on going, saying, "oh, it only hit my fender."

It should be quite rare for a pet to be on the loose. Irresponsible pet owners FTL.

Still, there's no reason to hit one and keep going. Pets escape, irresponsible owner or not.

So pet on the loose = irresponsible owner = pet deserves to be hit by a car?

Hell no, the pet doesn't deserve to be hit by a car. All I'm saying is that the whole situation could've been avoided had the pets owner had a bit of common sense and had the pet confined. It's not that hard.

I drive rural areas at work and see dog after dog wandering the 55 mph roads I drive every day. Every one of those dogs is in harms way because of an irresponsible pet owner. I love animals and hate to see them in such dangerous situations. It's only a matter of time before they are hit.

For the record, I would never "keep going" if I hit a dog. I would do exactly what you said you would do....

Eh, I wouldn't have worried about it. First, an animal stupid enough to do that doesn't deserve any help, Darwin will take care of it. Secondly, I agree, a thud like you heard means it ran into you, not vice versa, and the dog probably wasn't hurt anyway.

In fact, I ran over a snake tonight, it was dark and I didn't see it until it was about ten yards away from me, but it was definitely a snake. Anyway, judging from where it was when I saw it, I'm 90% certain I nailed it right on its head, and 100% certain I didn't want to screw with it even if it didn't die on the spot. I'm guessing it was 2-3 feet long, and from what I saw it was tan/brown, though I really have no idea what kind it was. In any case I was not about to pull a Steve Irwin and grapple with it in the dark while it's seriously pissed and almost definitely mortally wounded.

I would stop and check for damage. If there was damage you could try to find the owner so they could pay for it. Shouldn't have their dogs loose.

Yes always stop. Make sure critters are dead and not suffering . Also don't need another motorist getting hurt . Trying to avoid road kill.

a rabbit, squirrel or some small wild animal? no
something big like a deer? - hell yes

dog or cat? depends on if i'm near a house. I'd get out and at least check to see if it had a collar with tags and let the owner know if possible. if i'm near a house i'd see if the dog belonged to them.

Only animal I have hit in my 36 years of driving I was already trying desperately to stop and still hit it. It was a dog and I got out to see what I could do but he had already jumped up and was across the road running back into the neighborhood so I guess I had already slowed enough to not hurt him badly. If I should be so unfortunate to hit another I will defintely stop to do what I can.
