Pay it. You aren't paying to have a problem fixed. You're paying for services rendered.

BS. You are paying for a problem to be fixed.

I'm not saying don't pay, but I'd try to negotiate it down. Tranny flush is good prev. maint. so at least there is that. But if the fan wasn't bad and it was replaced - I wouldn't want to pay for that.

If you go to the doctor and he thinks you have cancer and orders an MRI or exploratory surgery which comes back negative, do you pay for it? Just because the problem isn't fixed (or didn't exist) doesn't mean you shouldn't pay for the services they performed.

Completely different thing.

Last I checked, a car is a crapload easier to diagnose and fix than a human body.

If a plumber comes over to your house to fix a leak, spends six hours working, and your sink is still leaking, would you pay him? I sure as hell wouldn't pay him fully.

I also wouldn't expect the plumber to say "Well, I don't know what the problem is. I'm outta here as soon as you pay me."

He asked for $250 after we talked to him. Of course on the way home the light came on again. I called AAMCO and they do a diagnosis free. Tomorrow perhaps.

I'd throw out $100 at him and say "take it or leave it", he's a mechanic, part of his
expertize is to know which parts/ procedures will correct the problem. If his experence
is not enough for a proper diagnosis he should turn down the job and send you to a tranny
shop..

I've never known a mechanic to guarantee work on a computer controlled warning light. They always hedge their bets. Modern vehicles are way too complex to find the problem on the first shot 100% of the time.

Anyways, if the mechanic talked it over with you and asked if you wanted him to do the work it's now your responsibility. If he just did it after the diagnoses without asking you can tell him to take a hike.

If the code was for overheating, then the mechanic performed the appropriate initial actions. By flushing the fluid he removed any potentially burn fluid that may have caused damage to the transmission if left in it. By adding the oil cooler fan he chose the simplest, least expensive, and most likely remedy for the overheating. I would still pay.

Transmission flushes are not recommended by car manufacturers, and they rarely do much of anything. They're pretty much a scam.

I would like to add that the moment we start paying full price for mechanics to do work that doesn't fix our problem is the moment mechanics start to take advantage of the situation by not finding the problem on their first try.

if you walk then pay in full, I'd negotiate it out to a final 'fixed' price though.

Did he pull the codes or just throw parts at it?
