Do you spit on the ground and why?

I see some kids doing this all the time. I never understood why someone would do that. It doesn't make sense. So do you spit on the ground and why ?

Yes. When I spit in an upward direction it always falls to the ground so I made it easy on nature and spit downward.

But seriously, I always thought spitting was a bad habit. I only do it when I go running, and for some reason a bunch of spit builds up in my mouth.

Otherwise I don't.
