On occasion I will have a drink with a very select few co-workers. Tonight a few of us are going out to congratulate a former co-worker on getting a better job.

God damn NO!

I barely feel safe on the job. I work with a bunch of women and gays and would surely be raped if I were to see any of them away from work.

I never do either. I don't need nearly as much people time as most people do, and I don't normally have a lot of shared interests. People older than me just want to talk about football, local/office politics, or the weather, and people younger than me just want to talk about Pokemon and Nintendo, even though they were blastocysts when a lot of their favorite characters were introduced.

Not anymore really.

Not trying to sound anti-social or paranoid, just that in my experience 'the drama' (often produced by alcoholics) will eventually find you. That just leads to your life getting more complicated and stressful on a few levels.

The guy you share an office with gets drunk, tells you things about other coworkers and/or himself that makes you wonder if you should tell the police. Your 'office wife' has a bad week and decides to cross that line leaving the Xmas party, lays one on you and goes for your zipper... seconds before your boss smartly swings into the parking space alongside your door. Or you just have a good old fashioned misunderstanding with someone after hours, and their hurt feelings affect any and all collaboration with that person from then on.

I guess what I'm saying is unless it's a strong friendship involving trust, existing before the job maybe, it's easier having acquaintances who can't get you fired.

Of course. Over the years I've become very close with my now ex-coworkers. I would literally give many of them a kidney (well only once, hopefully more than one wouldn't need one) if they needed. We are family.

I feel bad for people who haven't worked in a place like that because I know how miserable it is to dislike or even just not love your coworkers.

Dude that's the spice of life. You're missing it.

False.

Let's just say I'm a lucky bastard, one who doesn't spend much time missing things that are readily available. 😉

If you like living spicy where you earn your living and can handle all the hurdles that provides, more power to you I guess.

Most of the people I work closely with who do socialize out of work almost exclusively spend their time playing golf together and I fucking hate golf. So, no.

Sorry. I was referring only to this particular statement. My boss would have fun with that one 😀 Not a prude.

When I was younger, I did a lot more drinking, and hanging out with co-workers. Now I skip all company events and go home.

At all my previous careers, absolutely not.

At my current one, definitely. We hang out all the time because I actually care about them. It's awesome working with people who are your friends outside of the job.
