Both of my parents are chain smokers. As such I loathe those cancer sticks with a passion. Almost put my little brother in the hospital when he started puffin, was so mad...

Had a hot girl put a lit one in my mouth once at a party. I was flat pissed, she was damn hot, so I took a drag. Nasty, coughed it out right in her face and felt like an ass. Felt obligated to at least try to handle a cigar when a good friend gave me one when he got his Daddy upgrade. Was told I turned a bit green, good times were not had by all.

I can understand people smoking cannabis, but commercially modified tobacco? Cigars that taste like they've been dipped in roofing tar? Does not compute.

I smoked for years, 1 to 2 packs a day. Quit once for 6 1/2 years using accupuncture, but took it up again, only to quit cold turkey and haven't touched them since. 20 years ago last month actually.

I smoke the occasional cigarette, but mainly use Swedish snus and nasal snuff. I started because I liked the taste, and kept going because I became addicted. Neither nicotine, nor tobacco are especially bad for you, but breathing in smoke, and smoke containing substances are. Tobacco is as safe as other minor vices if you use a safe form.

I smoked for 5 years and then quit after leaving the army, I used champix and it worked like a fucking charm, then I went back to school and fell of the wagon... I guess it's mostly a social thing, somehow socializing as a smoker with other smokers is just much easier than with non-smokers. I honestly don't mind having started again, I used to smoke a pack a day, but now I don't even smoke some days and it's usually around 5 smokes a day if I do, which is practically nothing.

That's what I hear. I did some google-ing on them a week or two ago...some folks have done some severe mods on them...they remind me more of crack pipes than e-cigs.
I saw a couple of places that sell 48mg refills...that'd give you a hell of a buzz!

Green Smoke. Easy to use, no filling, etc. Try to find a local seller (mall kiosk) it's faster and usually cheaper than from their website.

I started for fun, continued the addiction for years due to the effects of addiction. Quit for health reasons. It was extremely difficult to quit and I think most people that smoke habitually (99% or more) only do so because of the discomfort of withdrawal and its entanglement with dopamine (and other neurotransmitter) regulation. Also, I don't believe in free will any more.

to look cool in front of chicks, to display importance, to display tough life, to revolt against parents, and of course to release stress...

Used to, from about age 17-23. Started with black and milds maybe a pack a week with friends, to smoking cigs almost a pack a day for 4 years. I "quit" a few times in there, longest was for about 3 months but went back to it.

I finally "quit" the real things when e-cigs started gaining in popularity about three years ago, and I've been using that since. I'm sure e-cigs are still worse than not smoking at all, but I can say that after the first two months of switching over, I stopped coughing up shit every morning and I generally feel better now than when I was smoking for real.

I feel much better now too. It has been 5 months since I quit. I have cheated twice while drinking and had a cig each time. It was really nasty. Sometimes I get the urge, but I am not a smoker anymore. I did not use e cigs or a patch or gum. I was rolling my own with Drum tobacco and putting a filter too. That helped me quit I think. I wish I could smoke a bowl and one day I will, but now now. Smoking a bowl is much better but I might vaporize it when I can do that again.

Yes I do.

Why? That's a damned good question. I've tried to quit a couple of times...made it a year and a half once...and fell off the wagon.

(substitute one type of nicotine for another.)

A year and a half, ouch.

None of that substitute crap works. I was a heavy smoker and finally quit 11 years ago, remember I just got really drunk, so drunk that I couldn't go out and buy a pack of smokes lol.

I remember I would read and re-read a book by Allan Carr. After the first few days it was actually quite easy, there is no physical addiction, it's all mental a habit I suppose.

Two weeks after I quit my buddy came over and we had a few drinks he sabotaged me. He left two smokes on my table when he left. I did smoke them but quit again for good.

Man for a couple years, every once in a while I would have a dream where I would start smoking and tell myself I'll quit again after this pack. But I would wake up and realize, Holy shit that was a dream.

I would get that book and not substitute anything.

EDIT: This is the book that helped me quit, glad I stumbled across it at the time.

33 years for me, and I am currently 7 months, 20 days, 18 hours, 19 minutes, 22 seconds, without a cigarette.

Mainly I quit so I could bring my mother home from the hospital/nursing home, into a smoke free environment. (she has smoked for 50 years, and has a few months extra on me as far as being quit.)

But mainly I quit because it is tearing me up inside, and my lungs/chest seem to be on fire some days. 7-8 months into quitting, and I still cough up these black, mottled, "sputnum." I got to figure I am cleaning myself out, but after 33 years of a pack a day, it's going to be a bit.

It is, one of the hardest things I have done, and I have done it, many, many, times. At seven months in to quitting, it is so hard to read of other folks that started again after 1.5 years, etc. Just incredibly difficult.

The OP wants to know why we smoke, and that's a pretty simple answer for me. Nicotine. A stimulant, delivered in the most quick and efficient way... as something inhaled. Boom, done. Hooked day one or so, when I stole a Cigarette from my parents and smoked it under the patio table at 13 years old.

Don't smoke cigarettes. *uck nicotene. It'll kill you.

Damn that happens to me too, but I didn't spark it up, but almost. Scary stuff!

I smoke a cigar 3-4 times a week. I like the time it gives me to think if I'm smoking alone or the social aspect when smoking with friends. And it's enjoyable. Premium cigars are much like wine - many complex flavors. And the strong ones will give you a nicotine buzz.

Same here. I used to be a pack-a-day smoker, but now just a few per week. I switched to Swedish snus and love it. And you're right....its not the nicotine thats harmful, its how the tobacco is processed and the additives.

Ive been smoking since 1982 while in high school. I started because I thought it was cool. Now I am the only smoker amongst all of my friends and peers. I am the most non cool person now. I smoke 4 packs a week and I really hate ssmoking. I am 45 now and have been a smoker most of my life. I think about quitting all the time and it gives me so much anxiety that I light up just thinking about it. I wish I could put myself in a coma for a year and be detoxed. Never smoke cigarettes. Its the worst thing in the world.

So, crack and weed are in the same category?

Lol, nope. cocaine is schedule 2 while weed is schedule one (with heroin). According to the DEA if I was forced to either use cocaine or weed cocaine would be safer.

I dont smoke, Ive only smoked (tobacco :p) twice and they were American spirits, so they didnt have many additives in them. That was like a month ago, maybe longer, and almost every day i think to myself "man, it would be sweet if I could have another cig right now". I would highly advise those who dont smoke to NEVER try it, after two nearly pure tobacco cigarettes I have cravings for them. They make you feel relaxed and if its your first few times you get a slight buzz.

because I'm a dumbass

I have all kinds of justifications. I've quit a hundred times and started back up 100 times. Bottom line is that I always end up getting stressed out at work and break down. Every single flipping time.

same here...couldn't have said it better really. As for starting in the first place? All my friends were doing it...

My mother smoked all while I was growing up; then in 2005, she had a stroke while my dad was out of town. When he got back home, he found her on the floor, barely alive. She lived, but her whole right side is now paralyzed, her brain's badly damaged (she can barely speak, can't understand even how to use a Kindle), and she's never going to get any better.

So no, I don't smoke. :'(
