Why the F*CK would you sleep on the floor, and why aren't more people suprised by this admission?

Beds are expensive and take up lots of room. ;)

So are cars, but they're a necessity in many (nearly all) parts of the country.

Some people need a firm (read: hard) surface due to their back problems. I am one of the people who gets back aches if I sleep on a soft mattress. At the moment I have the firmest mattress I could find, but at times it actually helps me to sleep on the floor (it's carpeted). Not like one is uncivilized because of how they prefer to sleep.

King size pillowtop mattress/boxsprings/bedframe. Puts me about 3' off the ground. The floor is hard.

I use to sleep on the floor, but my girlfriend kept complaining of the bruises she'd get during sex so I decided to take pity on her and get a bed for her. When she's bad I still make her sleep on the floor though.

In Japan and other parts of the world it's very common. Often at most a bedroll is used. Many people in the world must share one room for sleeping, cooking, bathing and entertaining, a bed would be too space consuming for them.

We sleep on a queen size futon mattress.. on the floor.

Does that count?

Mattress w/ box spring on the floor, but sometime soon I'm going to rig up my hammock and sleep on that regularly.

Mostly I sleep on a bed because it is the social norm.
Sleeping on the floor or on the ground takes some getting used to but for me, I feel better when I do. I don't have back problems, it's just nicer.
I bought the firmest mattress I could, but it was also very cheap. I've had it for only a few months and already I can feel the springs through the fabric of the mattress. Time to get some padding. Or go back to sleeping on the floor.

In my current room there's not enough floor to sleep on with a full sized bed in here. When I get my house I'll have 3 bedrooms and I might just turn this bed into a guest bed.

A good futon on tatami (tatami is not just rice mat on a concrete floor) is supposedly very comfortable...it's one of my requirements for our visit, mostly because I won't have an option.
