Do you say sir and ma'am?

It's a pretty straightforward question. If you're in the military, did you say it before you joined?

Being from the deep south, we'd get spanked for not saying it (I'm talking early 90s). It's pretty much ingraned in me, though living here in the North is starting to change my habits a bit.

Of course. It's the civil thing to do.

I give everyone common respect. Without civility and common respect, society becomes... well, much like it is today. 🙁

Yes sir.

And I consider it a slap in the face when someone says "don't call me sir".

In anything but a casual setting, anything less than "yes ma'am" or "yes sir" is inappropriate.

I agree. It really seems disrespectful when people don't say it. Especially little kids. People are ill-mannered in this town, and it's seriously rubbing off on me. I need to head back south, or at least somewhere better than here.

I try to avoid it, in either case. I wish there were a less formal gender-neutral honorific that could be used instead.

I do too. Down here in the South, though, it's the normal thing to do.

I don't mind calling men my age sir (early 20s), but it's weird to call women "ma'am" when they're in their early 20s. Some women are offended by it...

Then "miss" will do.

Those titles are usually reserved for when you're addressing people older than yourself as a form of respect.Of course in my case most folks older than me are usually refered to as "The dearly departed" 🙂
