So I was upgrading my M8 to the GPe 5.1 build last night, and for the first time since I got into Android in 2011 my device isn't rooted. I purposefully didn't because I feel Android in 2015 doesn't need all these root hack apps to be fully functional like in the Gingerbread era, especially since Google stopped its war on SD Cards. My Nexus 7 isn't rooted either.

My iPad Air 2 is Jailbroken, and I will probably only update it through its life when Jailbreak exploits appear for new versions of iOS. But if not for Kodi, ssh and f.lux I would probably do without jailbreak too on that device.

So do you Jailbreak/Root/ROM?

I don't feel the need to usually but I still like the convenience of Titanium Backup and I like AdAway as well. I definitely agree that it's less and less necessary nowadays.

I used to Xposed Kit Kat to pieces, tweaking this quick toggle or how big the notification bar is. But ignorance is bliss for Lollipop- I don't even know what tweaks are out there. Some Xposed modules bring instability, so I don't mind staying in the dark.

I will say that I need root and Xposed on my Android Stick I use as a hotel HTPC. I use Xposed to force all the apps into immersive mode to hide the non-television friendly Android bars, and I also use root to connect Six Axis controllers.

Yes. That was the primary criteria I used when selecting my phone. I wouldn't consider a device I didn't have root on. If you don't have root, you don't own it.

Or just install a different launcher.
Yes!! Touchwiz is a total non issue on my Note 4 with the Nova launcher.

I can't root my note because it's the at&t version, but the only reason I would would be to try Xposed. My friend says it's awesome, but then I heard it doesn't work with android 5.0, so that would make rooting a non issue.

Bootloader unlock + root. Root by itself doesn't cut it for me anymore.

I had a jailbroken 7.0.2 iphone, waiting on a 8.2 jailbreak because accidental update. Marked as Jailbroken anyway. Needed multiple choice.

You did right, I wanted people to vote their philosophy not what is in their pocket this second. I am a both in actuality, but in my mind this week I turned into a stock guy. I would unJailbreak my iPad tonight if iOS could do what Android can do.

I think your philosophy has repercussions. For example, until this week I only cared about the best Android hardware I could get. Even if the stock OS sucked as long as the hardware was good and I could get CM on there I was fine. My choice was based on benchmarks. Now I will probably never buy a phone again that doesn't get fast and official AOSP updates, which means a superior phone like a S6 isn't even on my radar and I get an upgrade next month.

I think this is a root/ROM kind of place but I hate to assume. I have heard on more that one Android podcasts of former rooters giving it up because their Nexus or One Plus is good enough.

No, Verizon Note 4...

Never again will I buy a phone that doesn't have root. Phone is ass in stock form, even with tweaks, launchers etc. The only reason I don't take my rooted+rom Note 2 back from the wife is the Note 4 has a vastly superior radio. LTE signal is low at my house, and it's my home internet with hotspot. So basically the Note 4 is an outrageously expensive router while home.

definitely, I'm using a rooted phone but with the bootloader locked. I think my next phone will have to be BL unlocked, rooted and underclocked. I got so much more battery life that way.

I have root of my LG G3 but its really to run Adaway. I don't think I would root this phone if there was a adblock app I could get from Amazon or Google app store.

Same here - I rooted all my devices in the 2.x era and early 4.x but now I just don't see the point.

The only place I find ads to be obnoxious is the full page web ads and Firefox can block all ads without root.
I'm fine for ad supported apps or small web ads as the developers need to get something out of their time. That said I'll always pick the ad free paid version of an app over the free ad supported version of an app I use a lot.

Edit: To answer the OP, S5 running stock 5.02 although I'm seriously thinking about going back to 4.4.4 if the OTA that's queued up on my phone doesn't sort out some issues.

I gave that a try buy since I'm a heavy RSS reader I was getting annoyed with the ads in the articles when I let my RSS reader app open articles.

I jailbreak for almost the exact same reason. I also use iFile to play movies off SD card, and some ad blockers to get rid of the constant stream of annoying ads on YouTube.

Flux is also one of those things that you don't miss until it's gone. Makes a big difference web browsing or reading at night. Something like that should just be integrated into the OS nowadays.

i used to root and JB all my devices but stopped prior to getting a tab pro. I see no need anymore. I stopped using all things apple and my note 4 just doesnt need it. I thibk the last device I rooted was my note 3. My S4 I gave to my son and I sold my S5. I have an ipad 4 but I dont even use it so JBing it it is futile.

I finally rooted and unlocked the bootloader on my Verizon s3 this past November. I will never buy another phone without ensuring I can do the same. It's a very different, much better device now, although I am thinking about an overclock to see if that helps with the bit of lag I experience. The ability to make backups alone makes rooting worthwhile.

Note 2, bootloader unlock + root. Currently running a custom 5.0.2 ROM.

I wouldn't run any other way.
