I swear, there are so many rude and unmannered people in this world. Keep in mind that I work in the communications department handling the PBX/Doctor's Exchange for a hospital, and it boggles me on how rude and obnoxious people can be at times on the phone. I mean, I try to be a courteous as possible when it comes to answering and responding on the phone. I called another hospital looking for someone and the way they respond is just malicious. They respond with this attitude that gives you the big impression that they are supposedly doing something big (in their pbx department), like curing cancer or something and that you disturbing them is causing them angst. OMFG. Fvckin' pricks. Time to be a biatch and complain to the hospital by emailing them. That hospital is supposed to be well-funded and very big as well. WTF.

i am always polite on the phone even at home.
working at a job that is mostly talking with customers over the phone makes you realize that the way you speak makes a huge difference.

i think subconsiously i treat people differntly if they are nice or rude or ignorant on the phone

I try to be polite, but when someone is rude to me I can't seem to help myself. My biggest peeve is someone calling and the call leading to them asking me "who is this?" But the average IQ is 100, low enough to not be damaged by watching crap like Fear Factor and MTV, to lead to AOL being the #1 ISP, to lead to people pouring coffee on themselves and winning lawsuits from it to become millionaires... Vapid stupidity is to be expected in all areas - including on the phone :(

Ya, I know what you two mean. The way someone responds tends to rule judgement for how you react and so forth in that current telephone coversation. The most irritating thing is that since I work for a doctor's answering service, I get really peeved when people say a name that is spelled strangely and they expect you to know how to spell it. It's like WTF do you think I am, Mr. name dictionary or something? Or if people talk really quickly and you're trying to type down what they're saying and then they start mumbling. HELLO?! WTF ALREADY. Go learn to speak proper english and then come back to me asking for help god dammit.

I work in tech support so I'm quite obligated to answer the phone politely..but then I get sick of it when I'm not at work so it all goes away :)

I don't like calling CSR's in other companies who are overly polite though, that just disgusts me :p

Yeah, and then THEY get upset at you because they are spelling a mile a minute because obviously THEY know how to spell their last name, and you should too.

Anyhow, on a side note, I am pretty polite on the phone, but I've always wanted to answer the phone "Huxtable Residence"

At work, we get tons of calls, so yeah, the standard "Good afternoon. The Gramophone, this is xxxxx speaking, how may I help you?".

Personal calls, I'm usually pretty happy on the phone, so it's "helloooooo?" or "hallo?" or "yo" depending on what caller ID says ;)

I hate when I'm at home and I answer the phone like "Hello, this is Jason". gaaah, it always catches the other person off-guard.

Rarely at my work the caller-id on the phone says it is someone in the office calling, but it is really a transferred outside call... that is the worst. I'm like "Yo..." or "Hey..." and the other side is like "ummm.... hello?". Of course I feel like a total dick, and have to explain myself lol.

I'm never really rude on the phone, but I have a tendancy for answering with "yeah, what's up?" (both at work and on my cell), and I hang up on people a lot.

I don't hang up on them to be rude, but, like, the conversation is over and I have things to do. I'd rather not spend 5 minutes saying goodbye... so I say "see ya later" and *click*.

gotta try that at work :)

we all use an internal instant messaging system for 95% of conversations, so when I get a phone call at work from someone within the company, it's almost always just an extension of an online conversation that we were in the middle of (some things are just a lot easier to explain over the phone).

Realistically, @home I'll answer "Sup bitch" if I know who it is from caller ID, othewise It's just a generic "hello".
@work, I just answer "RaynorWolfcastle" where my real name substitutes the nickname.

I always answer the phone politely but I have encountered my fair share of those who don't. I remember once calling an upholstery cleaning service to get rates and the guy answered the phone "Yello." I immediately hung up. If he can't even answer the phone professionally what makes me have confidence he will do a good job on my furniture?

Reminds me of the last time I was in the emergency room. They brought this woman in who had glass embedded in her eye and she was crying, carrying on and basically giving the staff a really really hard time. I will never understand why anyone would go out of their way to alienate the people who are trying to help you.

In case any of you are wondering I was in there to have my lip sewn back together after it met my surfboard. I had to wait 2 hours for a plastic surgeon, they kept me comfortable while I waited and I didn't mind. This happened a few years ago. I don't even have a scar now from it though.

Yeah, I'm pretty polite on the phone...

But what really bugs me is when I answer the phone and the person asks, "Who is this?" WTF is that, at least ask for someone.

It's more fun when both you and a (friend/spouse/realtive) answer your home phone at the same time, and start a conversation with each other ,while ignoring the person that actually called.

At work I answer with "Tech Ops, this is Justin, how can I help you?" or something similar.

At home or on my cell? That's a "sup?" a "hey" or a "yo."

But I don't much like talking on the phone, I'd much rather talk to the person face to face (well, unless it's someone I don't like, then it's the phone for sure). I can hide when I'm peeved with the person over the phone, but not as well in person.

I'm always polite, even when I'm being rude. It's taken years of practice to be rude to customers on the phone, yet sound cheerful, friendly, and trying to be helpful at the same time. :)

Sometimes when dealing with idiots, when I have to repeat myself because their response wasn't something I gave them as a choice, I just apologize "I'm sorry, I give those choices so often, I must have said them too fast for you to comprehend. Cherry coke wasn't one of the options. Again, [really slowly] pepsi..... diet pepsi..... mountain dew...... sierra mist. " That way, they're not 100% sure I'm treating them like the morons that they generally are.

When I lived in Nashville me and my roomates used to answer "Go ahead" in our best trucker voice.

I'm crazy aren't I!

Yeah, I try to be pretty polite on the phone. The main exception is when my sister's friends call the house and I say "Hello?" and all they reply with is "Is Sarah there?" That aggravates me to no end; you don't have to say who you are, I don't care, but at least greet me politely. "Hi, is Sarah there?" is so much better. Most of the time, I just say "Hold on." or something equally short and quasi-rude.

When I used to call friends back in high school, I'd always say "Hi, may I please speak to XXXX?" The funniest way (I think) to answer the phone is to just say "Speak." I do that a lot on my cell when I know who's calling. Someone I used to work with did that and it was so funny.

Whenever I've had a job where I needed to answer the phone, it'd always be something like "Thank you for calling XXXX, this is John, how can I help you?"

I usually say 'hello', but sometimes I say 'Hello, you've reached the ______ household, this is Ned speaking, how may I direct your call?"
