Do you respond to txts in the middle of the night?

So I'm curious bc I have received complaints from people about this. I sleep late and I'll remember a question that I'll forget in the morning so I txt my friends sometimes as late as 3am.

I always thought that txts are low priority so that people would not feel obligated to respond right away. That's how I treat txt msgs at least. My phone is always on vibrate and I could not even bothered to answer it if I'm doing anything even half important (or sleeping). I got numerous complaints from friends that I txt them in the middle of the night, since that would never bother me, I assumed that others wouldn't respond to them either.

That's the accepted standard? Acceptable or not?

Some people will get woken up. Not everyone is up at 3 a.m. Wait until the morning out of respect. The world doesn't revolve around you.

I never said it did, I kinda assumed that ppl wouldn't sleep next to their phone on a normal profile

Have you considered that not everyone sets their phone on vibrate, and even the sound of their phone vibrating may wake them up?

I often times use my phone as an alarm clock. Since I wake up to it vibrating a text message can do the same thing, although I have slept through a few. Still it would annoy me for my phone to buzz/beep at 3am anywhere in my room.

I don't wake up to anything in the middle of the night, save for intruders in my house.

House phones set to silent, cell phone set to vibrate.

So your friends have said that they do not like it when you text them late night/early morning and your wondering if what your doing is wrong? Well obviously if they dont like it.

I use my phone as my alarm clock so it is always on and next to me throughout the night. If I get texts in the middle of the night, sometimes I will respond, sometimes I will read them and not respond and sometimes they will not even wake me up. Normally I personally wouldnt care if people are texting me late at night, but I can understand how others would not like it.

I was taught to never call anyone after 10pm, or perhaps even 8pm - common courtesy.
You call/text me at 3am, it had damn well better be important.

I would only do this to a good friend, or if it there truly was something on my brain that couldn't wait...but didn't merit a phone call. Besides, it's nice waking up in the morning with a few text messages.

call != text imo

i don't call anyone past 9:30 unless I know they are up or if it can't wait

It probably wouldn't wake me up, as my phone stays in the other room. But I know some people keep it close by in case of emergency or for an alarm clock.

Call = text. You sent a digital message that you expect a response to, eventually. Same thing, since both stand the same chance of annoying the intended recipient.

If you just want to ask a question, send an email. It'd better be important for a phone call or text in the middle of the night.

Having said that, I use my phone as an alarm clock so its on my night stand with the volume up.

at my old job, I was on-call 24/7... calls were rare, but when they did come, it was usually a major emergency. I kept my phone right next to my bed and left it on all night. texts would definitely wake me up, but my friends knew better.

I don't mind texting someone if I know they're at work or something, but if I'm reasonably sure that they're probably sleeping, it'll wait for the morning.

I can definately see how it's annoying if it wakes them up. I always thought though, that txts are low enough priority that most people set profiles on their phone so that at a certain time, they are completely silent. I do it that way and know some friends who do that. I think i was overestimating how many ppl actually use this feature on their phones however.

Keep your phone off if you don't want to be bothered at night. I really don't know why people leave them on and then get pissed.

If your phone doesn't have an alarm only option, get a real alarm clock. I'm willing to bet that most phones have a way of only having the alarm go off

Texts always vibrate my phone. If it's important enough, they'll call instead of text which results in a waking-the-dead ring. I ignore texts if I'm sleeping because, by nature, they're not important.

ive never seen that feature on a phone, but most people I know only have entry-level or decent phones. Is this a smartphone feature? Sounds nifty.

I use my phone as an alarm too.

It doesn't have an option to permanently change profiles at certain times. Don't text people early in the morning!

I don't think I've ever had a phone that would automatically change to vibrate or silent based on time. I always sleep with my phone next to me, and I never set it to vibrate. If someone is calling me when I'm sleeping, it's probably important and I'll probably want to hear the phone ring.

If you want to send someone a low-priority message at night, send an e-mail.

I do that with my BB, it has a profile feature so that every notification can be distinct. It also has an auto On/Off feature which could completely take care of this. You can also get apps that do this with most of the major OSes such as for BB, symbian, android, iphone

My phone isn't even in the same room with me at night. I usually put it in a drawer in the kitchen when I get home and that's where it sits with my wallet and keys until I go out next.

So are you for or against? between your two posts, it's unclear
