Do you remember what search engine you used before Google became the standard?

I used Alta Vista. I liked it for it's clean, no-nonense interface, and the fact you could use boolean logic in constructing your searches. And then someday, don't remember exactly why, I stopped using it and switched over to Google. The rest is history :)

edit: according to altavista's site, the first ever index of html web content was developed in 1995 (only 10 years ago!) by a team of boffins at DEC in Palo Alto, CA. This index was made available as the AltaVista search engine.

altavista, I think

It seems like so long ago. Altho really, it can't have been more than several years ago, right?

Probably 5 years at the most, I don't remember using Google before about 2001 or so. But yeah, it does seem like ages ago

I used Altavista all the time. Clean interface, no BS. It's too bad it fell so far behind. Only thing I use it for now is the translation functionality, although I don't use it for that much anymore since Google does it too now.

actually put it that way, a search page isn't really the 'homepage' or the first thing I thought about when browsing web. search is something deliberate you do, like online banking, not something as reflex as google now. in the past, usually i go directly to pages that I know of. It's google which brought me the habit of a 'search' page or a 'homepage'
