First MP3 I've ever downloaded: Metallica - Am I Evil? (Couldn't find a CD with that song on it, and I jumped at the chance to download a "CD Quality" version of the song, compared to the crappy RealAudio version I had before that)
Encoded with the free Fraunhofer codec at 112Kbps.
Was on a 28.8 modem at that time, around maybe 1995 or 1996 using DOS/Windows 3.11... And the MP3 player back then was also made by Fraunhofer I think, called WinPlay3. Shortly after that the first Betas of Winamp (v0.xx) started floating around (wasnt even skinnable at that point and it crashed ALL the time!)
Wow that was a long time ago!!! 🙂 ... Took a long long time before there was such thing as Napster. All my downloads were through IRC and DCC! (Plain jane UNIX IRC too, not mIRC or anything like that) ... Connected through a Terminal program called Qmodem, no PPP or even SLIP, all text based! ... Sheesh, how things have changed! (I think I had the option of opening up a SLIP connection and browsing with Mosaic or Netscape)
The Internet was alot different then too ... Nearly no SPAM for one 🙂
