I had the option of picking between the Genesis or a SNES for Christmas.. I chose the Genesis.

You chose poorly!

:p

Sonic was a bad ass back in the day :p

Sega does what Nintendon't!

Mortal Combat blood, anyone?!
Sports on Genesis were better too.

Haha, the original fanboy wars.

I got a GameBoy as a gift for my 8th birthday. I don't remember specifically telling my parents I wanted one but they probably knew I did. But I didn't get another video game system of any kind until I bought a GameCube in 2003. I always either played computer games or played video games at friends' houses.

I cried like a freakin suck when I got another year of piano lessons instead of a NES that one Christmas. Looking back, my parents were right.

But the first I ever bought myself was a used Genesis from a rich kid at school, had money burning a hole in my pocket and was almost out of the baseball card phase, so I bought his Genesis with Sports Talk Baseball and Joe Montana Football. Once I got NBA Live 95 and Hardball 3 or 4(I forget) that was it, I was hooked on games forever. I remember renting Toe Jam and Earl and Road Rash, but we were poor and once I actually bought a game I played the HELL out of it. Me and friends must've put 1000 hours into NBA Live 95, twas insane.

the first console we got was the Odyssey 2 which was sometime in the mid 70s.

Pretty sure we got it at Two Guys.

I had all the consoles when I was really young but they were all bought by my parents for my brother and me. When I was 12, however, I read in some gaming magazine about how awesome the Atari Jaguar was being the first 64-bit* console and having a totally rad CD add-on. $600 later and I think I played it for about an hour before getting bored. The only games I had were Myst, Rayman and some fighter jet game. I had more fun looking at the cool controller overlays that came with the games than actually playing them.

*2x32-bit, actually, "genius" marketing ploy by Atari.

That works out to be over $300 adjusted for inflation. Could you imagine anyone paying that for a console today? ... and all it does is play games... one at a time!

In hindsight, I wish I asked for a SNES. Genesis and Sega was the big thing in my class at the time. I remember the first time someone brought a Game Gear to class. We though they were a king. Both were great consoles though. It's too bad Sega stopped making hardware, just when they were starting to get it right.

Does Commodore 64 count? I still have the original Keyboard/PC btw, but the motherboard was replaced.

Otherwise the Atari 2600

I had the Atari, and NES, but the Sega Genesis was the first console I had a say in. I saved up my money all summer mowing yards to buy it myself. It was a tough decision between the Genesis and the turbo graphix 16.... Glad I chose the Genesis.

I asked for N64 and SNES for Christmas as a kid, if that counts. The first one I purchased on my own was N64. I was a Nintendo kid.

I think it was N64 -- I know we had both SNES and NES but I was so young I don't remember if I asked for them or not. Actually I think SNES is the first one I really asked for.

Dreamcast

My parents bought me gaming PCs that cost like $2000 back then so I could never convince them to buy me consoles. However I managed to make some money in the early MMOs and buy my own PCs in like 1998-2003, so then Dreamcast came out with Soul Calibur and I was like YES and they said sure

Birthday is 9/10 so I got it launch day 9/9 and played Soul Calibur all night with friends :)

technically, i had a say in all the consoles our family has owned. my parents don't know anything about video game consoles so it would have been impossible for them to choose without input from my brother and me

Mattel Intellivision, the wood grain version. I paid for it by saving money from mowing lawns and it wasn't cheap $300 or so and this was in 1979 or so. In today's dollars that close to $900!

I later bought the Intellivision II with the Atari 2600 adapter.

Months of allowance and delivering newspapers and my brother and I were able to buy the original NES... then a few years later we did the same for an SNES.

From there, it was mowing lawns for an N64... Playstation for my birthday, then flipping burgers and working retail for last gen consoles.

Suddenly after being a college graduate and living in the professional world, this generation seemed kinda cheap in comparison to the work/time required to pay for them.

Atari 2600. Bought it myself from summer job gigs and kid stuff. I was around 13-14 at the time and my mother had no idea what it was but she said she is definately NOT paying 250 buck (back in 1979, that was like 1000) so i had to work for it.

First console I got was an NES which was completely a win.
Second was a Sega Saturn that I chose OVER the PS1 .. fail.
Third and current is a PS3 that I chose over the Xbox 360. A win for me.

I saved and saved and when it finally came out my mom took me to Fred Meyer's and I bought it myself. God that was a long time ago.
