I was hooking up my NES, SNES and PS1 last night to my tv set (bought use a few years ago, all work still) and I was thinking about the first consoles I had. The first console I had was a NES that was a gift from Santa for my brother and me. The first console I had input in:

For my birthday (Sep. 2) and Christmas of 1991 all I wanted was a Super Nintendo. My mom actually allowed me to go to Wal-Mart with her and pick the system out. I got to pick out an extra game, which happened to be Final Fantasy 2.

I can't remember if I bought an SNES or a Genesis first. So, its one of the two. Santa brought the NES, I picked out everything after. Just not sure the order. :p

I was happy playing on my parents NES and the Gameboy they gave me. I was way too young to know that they came out with an SNES (I was about 6 or 7), however, my parents got me one anyways. The first system I wanted and had a say in was getting my N64 for Christmas.

The first console I purchased when I was a kid back in 86 (I was 10) was the Sega Master System along with Space Harrier. I bought it with the allowance I saved up and boy did I love it especially since I was a sega arcade fanatic backk then. Its a shame was sega is now but back then especially in the arcades they couldn't be beat in my eyes with stuff like outrun, golden axe, shinobi..etc. Slowly I bought the sms ports of those games.

NES. I think it was 1986 but the only console my family had known was Atari and my Dad got the Atari 7800 for Christmas for us that year. To give you an idea about my Dad when it came to Atari, he bought an Atari computer. I was very unimpressed with the 7800 especially in comparison to what I saw with the NES. So, I began saving up my money and several months later, I had enough to get the NES. My Dad ended up being impressed with the NES and my Mom told me that he wished he hadn't bought the Atari 7800.

Nintendo Gameboy because I bought it with my own money. Haven't received a console as a gift. I have bought a SNES, PS1, PS2, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, XBox, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS and XBox 360 though.

N64, though we'd had an NES for years before that. My first game was Star Fox 64, but Mario Kart, Goldeneye, and the Battletanx games probably got the most play time until Super Smash Bros. came out.

Yeah. Just put a little story into it how you asked and how it went about. I am looknig to hear how people got their first system when they realised what video games truly were like in the household.

Atari 2600 - xmas gift in 1986
NES - gift after I had surgery in 1988
Gamecube - purchased on release day
Xbox 360 - purchased about half a year after it came out

My friend across the street owned both SNES and Genesis so I got to play those often even though I didn't have the system.

Atari 2600 when I was in college.

When I was in high school I knew a guy who had an Odyssey - everyone thought it was so cool. Those were much simpler times :).

I got a NES and SNES as gifts. Don't remember if they were Xmas or birthday gifts though. Most likely Xmas as my parents didn't have a whole lot of money. 1st console I bought myself was a PS1.

Atari 2600 -- my brother and I asked for it for Christmas and got it for Christmas 1980, if memory serves. I didn't own another console until I bought a PSP and Xbox 360 in early 2007. I was an exclusive C64/Amiga/PC gamer between them.
