Ah, yes.
It was metacrawler back in the day.
Then Infoseek, and after that started to suck it was Lycos.
Till they changeds that all around, I was left with Yahoo!-
Alas, the inception of Google.

I get a kick out of folks @ work, sometimes Google doesn't work & they're lost...

I just surf to one of 1/2 dozen search engines & find what they're looking for. It's like Google is the ONLY search engine:D

I remember, as recently as 1999 or 2000, kids at school didn't know what Google was. They used aol.com or yahoo.

And now AOL and Yahoo both use Google.

No one's mentioned the Mckinley search engine yet, that's another one from way back. Mckinley.com takes you webcrawler now.

I remember using lots of sites to find results before Google. First Yahoo, later mainly Excite and Altavista. Would occasionally use Lycos, Infoseek and Mckinley.

I used to use Metacrawler and Webcrawler myself. And Ask Jeeves occasionally, back when they had the fun easter eggs in it ;) But I can't even imagine what it was like before Google anymore, how did we ever actually find things before them?

It was a horrible, barren existence, where finding things on the web was nigh impossible and pirates ruled the sea...wait...

I remember using WebCrawler when I first got on the web back in 1996. Bleah

Metacrawler
Hotbot
Northern Light

... in order of usage. Northern Light had a lot of stuff catalogued, but the relevancy was pretty bad.

For me, my order of favourites before I uncovered Google:

Infoseek
Excite
Yahoo
Dejanews for newsgroups/hard to find articles
Altavista
Dogpiles
Ask Jeeves
Northen Light

Then the magical google.

Each search engine did well for a while, but suddenly they didn't seem to give the same and good outputs like before. When one search engine got bad, the other search engine took its place, on and on. I still wonder why any company would downgrade its product rather than upgrade it.
