Oh telemarketing scams.

I got a call from a local number yesterday, someone with a thick Indian accent, asking me if I remembered filling out a coupon for a contest last holiday season. Turns out I did, it was likely in a grocery store or similar, and I won! I can come see a fabulous presentation on timeshares and win a free vacation!

Me: I'm on the do not call list. Don't call me again.
Him: Sir this does not count, you filled out a coupon which gives your consent.
Me: I moved here in June, and didn't know I'd be moving here until May. How could I have filled out a coupon last December with my current address and phone number?
Him: Perhaps if you did not, a friend or family member did it in your name. Either way you won!

Interesting how that works, which of my friends can see into the future?? I need to hang out with that guy more.

Good times.

Eh, I dunno, it smells to me like a telemarketer trying to lie their way around the do not call list.

I went to a Christmas gift fair last year. They had a booth at the entrance where they were passing out little boxes wrapped as presents. My girlfriend wanted one so I filled out a card asking for an email address. I entered my junk mailbox address and got the box.

We got home and opened the box. It was full of coupons for worthless trinkets at small retailers around town, as well as 10% off at stores you would never think of shopping at.

Several days later the spam started pouring in. Good thing that I didn't put down a phone number.

Yeah, I have gotten those. My dad yells at them about the do not call list. The second we ask for a number to call back on, they hang up promptly.
