Do you regularly service your car like you're suppose to?

My Honda is 2,000 miles passed its required oil change service. I have been putting so much mileage on it lately I would need to change its oil like I'm feeling up a tank of gas.

Then I need to get the transmission flushed, front brakes changed, and front tires replaced. I hate cars....

Well driving a Honda, I always make sure my timing belts are changed on schedule. I also have the transmission fluid changed every ~30k miles, and usually do the air filter and spark plugs at the same time. If you don't do the tuneups your car will still run, but you lose gas mileage or your car may run badly. I had an old Toyota that had a bad spark plug, and it ran really rough until I changed it.

Sort of.

We have a new-ish 2002 Honda Accord which we only put 5,800 miles in the first year.

I'm still undecided on the oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles. I think the oil should be changed based on mileage but the dealer says either 3,000 miles or 3 months, whichever comes first. Their justification is Oregon's "harsh weather", condensation, blah blah blah, we want your money, blah blah blah.

Well now we're at 6,600 miles and it's been almost 4 months since the last oil change. We're due for an oil change NOW (based on 3 months time frame not 3k miles). I'd like to put on as many miles as possible now to reach 7,500 in a hurry so I can have the 7,500 tune up AND oil change done at the same time.

What do you grease monkeys think? I don't want to risk damaging the car at all but getting the oil changed every 3 months is a PITA and no I won't do it myself because I'm lazy.

Oil Change companies tell you to change the oil every like 3000 miles. THere's all kinds of tests that say to change it anywher eform 2000 to 7000 miles. As long as you don't go for a really long time, you're fine. My car has a thing built in that counts the engine revolutions and calculates oil changes on that. I think it ends up being aroudn 6000 miles or so.

I do alot of my own car upkeep and I do it quite religiously. I use Mobil 1 and change the oil every 4k - 4.5k. Just had timing belt done and had everything checked out by the Nissan dealer. Told my that my car was the cleanest one of that year that he had seen.

Yes. Though someone screwed up at oil change place, spilled oil over engine... nice stain.

Can't wait for first tune up at100k.

Absolutely.

It is a complete waste if you do not. You're telling me you are going to ruin your 20,000$ piece of equipment due to plain lazyness?

Come on, it's 20 bucks and 20 minutes. Just go to Jiffy Lube and be done with it. Although, 2000 miles passed the 3000 mile limit isn't too horrible.

Just make sure you install a quality oil filter. The oil you use does not matter; any oil is worthless if it has solid particles in it.

There is nothing in any car that tells you when it's time to change the oil. If there is an oil change indicator, it's based purely on mileage..

MAYBE it could be based on driving conditions and milage, but I haven't heard of anything so complex in the automotive world yet.

I don't even know what service I need.
I know that I need to change my oil. So I do that every 4K miles or so.

But what else do I need?

I have a fairly new Honda w/ around 10K miles on it.

It depends. For example I have a 2002 Civic. The manual specifially says I'm supposed to change my oil every 1 year or 10,000 miles for the type of driving I do. I choose not to follow that and instead just change it every 5,000 miles (about 4 months). But this is better than what I'm supposed to do.

Other times I do worse. For example my tires are supposed to be rotated every 15,000 miles. That means at 15,000, 30,000, 45,000, etc. But the tires are only meant to last 50,000 miles. Why rotate them at 45,000 when you are replacing them at 50,000? To me that is pointless and I will skip the 45,000 tire rotation. So again I don't do all the regular services but it isn't going to hurt me here.

Air filters I change when they need to be changed - this I do regardless of the number of miles/months. It could be far less or far more often than I'm supposed to by blindly following round numbers that people made up.

So thats all I need to watch for?
-Oil
-Tire Rotation
-Filter

Wasn't there something like engine fluid or something that sounded equally expensive?

no one has looked at my '91 Sable since the mechanic told me it was OK to ignore the flashing Airbag light and replaced the fuel line to convince the check engine light from flashing.

That was, ooo, last fall. The car will die soon, no use prolonging its lifespan with repair after repair. Hopefully I will have enough $$ by then to buy a newer model Sable. (not thos ones where the interior is all ovals though. That be the ugly.)

I didn't see your post before.

Well.... it depends on your driving habbits.

When you do drive the car, does it reach maximum operating temperature for at least 20 minutes at a time? It is not good to drive for 5 minutes and then shut down before the engine is warmed up. Condensation and other oil contamination is very real. I would suggest letting your car warm up before driving it if you frequently do this. Also, if your car ever sits for like weeks at a time, it might be a good idea to have it changed at the 3 month intervals instead of 3,000 miles. Engine oil degrades and oxidises with time, and the dirtier the oil is, the faster this happens.
