We're required to recycle paper, cans, bottles and certain types of plastic but we don't have to separate them.

I let the township take everything but the paper. I take the paper to the library which has a giant dumpster and they get paid by the ton for what they collect.

I not only pay to have my recycling picked up, but then I have to pay a bottle deposit which I don't get back. I love stupid laws.

We have to now. We have to divide all waste into recyclables, organic and 'garbage'. The REAL big pisser is that the 'garbage' is just freaking plastic bags. That's all that's in there, styrofoam, plastic wrappings, etc. They only pickup garbage every other week while organics and recycling get picked up weekly. Think they're even making us pay for 'garbage' soon. All recyclables/organics are free, but gotta pay for a bin to dump bags...

..we have 3 seperate cans and sort as necessary and it's a good idea but the new found bounty isn't passed along to the customer so I see it as another green racket consumers are grifted into.

Yes, the city picks up plastic, glass, cardboard, and paper for recycling. All I have to do is put it in the appropriate bin and place it curbside with the trash. Paper in one bin, everything else goes in the other.

I only recycle paper/cardboard and plastic. Why? It saves me from having to pay extra charges because if I throw them out my garbage bin will be overfilled. So I just collect the stuff and dump it at the recycling center every two weeks or so.

Personally, most recycling doesn't make sense. The only recycling that makes sense to me is aluminum recycling, but I don't have nearly enough aluminum waste to make it worthwile to recycle it.

Sure do. I'm not vain enough to want to contribute more than necessary to the landfill as a memorial to my powers of consumption.

We put our trash in different colored plastic bags, Green is food waste, Red is paper, yellow is cardboard, Blue is plastic, and white is everything else. This I fetched once a week and goes to an optical sorting facility. Glass and metal goes in special containers outside the shops. Bottles and cans are recycled as is, you get a fee when delivering them, and there are special bottle recycle machines in the stores. Poisonous waste, oil, batteries and such things have to be delivered at the nearest petrol station. Electrical and electronic waste can be delivered at any store that sells such stuff.

So, yeah, we recycle..

Yes cans. I live in MI and they charge 10 cents each for a deposit. So it is worth it. In Iowa the 5 cent deposit wasn't.

Here's a thought:

Aluminum, scrap metal, etc., tends to get more expensive over time. Many plastics come from oil. As the value of those resources goes up, the value of recycled materials goes up. Eventually, as our technology increases, it's going to be economically feasible to "mine" landfills. Already, San Francisco recycles virtually everything. It's only a matter of time until someone can make a profit by mining a landfill. However, if the percentage of garbage that's recycled is too high, it'll never be economically viable to mine landfills. Thus, by keeping the percentage of recyclable material relatively high, we're encouraging a future where landfills will be mined for their valuable resources. :D

..interesting thought. No doubt they will find things that were never ment to be found.
