Do you recount money the bank teller has given to you?

Heck yes.

I've been shorted a 100 dollar bill many times. Well not many, but maybe 6-7 times.

Last time was a drive thru teller. Had to go back into the bank and wait a good 20 minutes while they checked the teller's drawer. one of those drive off then count then go back inside the bank. Got my money though so it was worth it.

banks encourage the customer to count as well. because if you come back in 5 minutes and say you were shorted, they cant help you. but if you count it right at the counter and say you were shorted, they can recount and fix the error.

I should say though, for me I just count along with them.

that's a good point. if they give you cash and not a direct deposit, you couldn't go back the next day and claim they shorted you. you could have just pocketed some money and there's no way to PROVE they shorted you. I usually don't count when shopping or cashing checks, but I should really start

well, their drawer would not have balanced. If the amount you said you were missing was the amount they were off, and they have a record of your transaction at that drawer, that would be proof enough for most banks.

If they short changed you, the teller wouldn't balance at the end of the day. So you'll get your money at the end of the day after the teller has balanced.

No I don't, I do it later.
If there's a discrepancy they won't take care of it until the end of the day when they do their books.
I do count my money from MAC machines as soon as I get to the car.

When I have been shorted they count the drawer right then and there.

At my bank, the tellers count out the money as they place the bills on the counter... hard for any error to crop up unless one of them is really amazing at sleight of hand...

What's a MAC machine? Is that what they call ATMs in Pennsylvania?

You're either trying to be funny or have been living under a rock. It's a common term.

I've never heard it either.

... you know that it's rare that a teller's till will perfectly balance? or at least I've been told that by multiple bank employees...

Not around here, it isn't. I've read MAC in some writings before, so I would know what you're talking about, but I very much doubt that any of the people in my family or friends would know it.... at least those people that live around here.

<edit>

Oh, and to answer the original question... yes, I recount the money, since most of the time I use the drive-thru, and can't count with the teller. I've never been shorted money, but they've given me too much money several times. I love it when I go to make a deposit, and get a receipt, and also get the cash back. Ummmmm...

Being honest is a PITA sometimes.

At the bank I worked at, if the tellers drawers were not balanced, they stayed there until they figured out the error.

Cool. That sounds more like it. I know of a couple of banks that accept X% error as "normal".

Bank tellers count the money on the counter right in front of me.

At PNC they ask you to count it back to them, i completely agree with this policy as it avoids a lot of hassle for both ends. If there is a mistake, it is immediatly corrected.

Edit: MAC = Money Access Center, and ive seen it all over the united states.

Last week, the teller neglected to give me $90 out of the amount I was depositing. Glad I checked before I drove off.
