Do you really care if Dell uses AMD?

HP is taking alot of marketshare right now. They are on the ups. Dell has to stay competitive and get what the customer wants, and thats opterons.

Their tech. support has REALLY dropped off lately. We have overnight service on all of our desktops and it still took a wek to get a HDD, twice it was never shipped from their warehouse, and the third time they shipped it ground instead of Air. :|

I dunno what is going, but it's terrible.

I think they are moving their support to Costa Rica.

I normally get gold support, so it's usually American, but that doesn't mean they know anything more than what their script tells them. Today we had a machine blue screen with memory parity errors and they wanted to send us a new HDD. 😕

We switched from Dell blades to IBM bladecenters due to a few factors one of which was AMD Dual Core availability.

I personally don't care if Dell uses AMD, but I know that a large percentage of computer users do care (that is why I bought AMD on Wednesday expecting an announcement from Dell Thursday 😉 ).

How did you know?

You know, I never liked Dell machines much, until I got to play with a modern PowerEdge a few days ago.

The thing is built like a BRICK. True quality in there. Not like the older PowerEdges I used to destroy, which were filled with all kinds of f'd up, proprietary goo. I'm still not a fan of the Dimension line. The modern Optiplexes are decent. They have a higher failure % than I'd like to see, but they're decent when they do work. This is going to be an interesting time.

Wild guess. 😉

* Dell's stock was in the sh!tter and Intel had nothing new to deliver at present.
* Hewlett Packard (AMD and Intel) was doing great during the same time Dell (Intel only) was doing poorly.
* The new AM2 socket allows both brands to use the same DDR2 RAM.
* AMD has new fabs online, thus increasing their overall capacity.
* Dell bought Alienware (AMD and Intel) to get their foot in the door with AMD.
* Intel found a new outlet to make up for any lost revenues due to Dell's announcement (Apple).

I was wrong about what they were using, though. I expected them to use the new Mobile Turion64 X2 (notebooks) instead of the Opteron (servers).

Nope, in fact I look forward to the even lesser price they will sell for.

Please explain your logic how using AMD procs in Dells will cause their price to go down? 😕

Okay, Intel procs sell for a premium simply for the name Intel. Is it not widely known that AMD systems typically sell for less😕

Hasn't Dell only officially said they will use the AMD chips in certain high-end servers? That doesn't affect me at all.

And honestly I don't really care about the processor war stuff any more. Any processor will do just fine what I use a computer for. But I guess for gamers it might matter. But I doubt most gamers buy Dells...

Have you seen the prices Dell sells Intel equipped machine for compared to everyone else? Dell buys them in hoards for low low price because Intel can supply them. Unless AMD gets busy they will never be able to supply the same amount of chips that Intel does to Dell.

Sit back and watch AMD as they "get busy."

I think in the long term it'll losen Intel's grip on the market and hopefully provide AMD the revenue they need to keep expanding and releasing good products. In the short term it'll probably equate to smaller numbers of retail chips available, which might mean inflated prices until AMD can meet manufacturing demands.
