Do you really care if Dell uses AMD?

Why is everyone so excited and jumping up and down over this?

I think it was the fact that the major corporations ditched AMD that made AMD such a fanboy-favorite among the enthusiast crowd, and having nicer and cheaper chips didn't hurt.

Now that AMD is becoming more mainstream, what is there so exciting about them?

They're just like Intel now, only much smaller.

i like AMD, they are a better value

when HP started offering AMD 3 years ago, we switched our corporate annual buy (~10,000 units) to AMD

Dell's competition is HP, Lenovo, Acer etc.

AMD's competition is Intel. Yes, now consumers can choose Opteron based servers instead. So that is a good thing.

Eventually, consumers will decide how much of what gets made. Lets see what happens.

One thing is for sure, Dell isn't as efficient as it used to be and HP has spent billions on improving their cost savings. It is going to be interesting.

I don't think it's going to make much of a difference considering only a very very small percentage of Dell's product line will be AMD.
But let's hope it's Dell's most popular line in the segment, so Dell will use AMD in consumer systems too.

I think it's a good thing. I like AMD, so I like to see them succeed in the marketplace, and this is a huge deal for them IMO.

This isn't really a big deal, because Dell is only using AMD Opteron processors in their mid to high-end servers right now. HP, IBM, and even Sun have already beat them to this market, and Dell is just playing catch up now.

You thought people chose AMD just because they were the little guys?

The fact that they are almost always faster in games didnt tell you anything?

Some in fact do choose AMD for that. But most don't. I know.

And the vast majority of people don't game, or are not hardcore gamers so they could care less about gaming speed. You could buy a cheaper dual core Intel nowadays anyway, so AMD has lost that advantage. At least price-wise.

Well, if they catch up, then prices might drop on it because once everyone has it, people go for the cheapest buy. Someones going to have to drop prices to get more sales.

Well, then they would have less money to make more of that product.

Not really. If they sell more for less, the could probably gain more profit because they are selling so much. Of course selling alot for alot is even better, but usually that doesnt happen. (other than absolutely top of the line stuff, but then thats only people with lots of money with nothing better to spend it on)

Of course it matters. If they have more profits they will have more to invest in research and development, and produce better processors faster.

Do you buy servers?

I just received 6 at work. Of course I ordered them before this. Would have been nice to have the money in the budget from the difference.

HP is taking alot of marketshare right now. They are on the ups. Dell has to stay competitive and get what the customer wants, and thats opterons.

Their tech. support has REALLY dropped off lately. We have overnight service on all of our desktops and it still took a wek to get a HDD, twice it was never shipped from their warehouse, and the third time they shipped it ground instead of Air. :|

I dunno what is going, but it's terrible.
