yes i read, but i haven't read anything new since the potter series. i do like books along the lines of battlefield earth (one of the best books i've ever read) and dune(series), LotR, starship troopers.

if anyone can recommend a book i would greatly appreciate it.

also do you buy your books or do you go to the library?

I would recommend Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I've read all the books you've mentioned (some of them multiple times) and this was the first book that jumped into my mind. It is one of my favorite SF books.

For fantasy, try The Icewind Dale trilogy(The Crystal Shard, Streams of Silver, and The Halfling's Gem) by RA Salvatore. You can get the individual books or he now offers the whole trilogy in one. This is one of my favorite fantasy series.

Hope you enjoy either of them. 🙂

It looks like you like space operas - try Weber's Honor Harrington series and Donaldson's Gap series (the latter only if you can tolerate a main character who starts out being quite evil).

Constantly. I read a book a week on average and now and then I'll read a whole book cover to cover in one sitting. I keep a book on me all the time for reading on the bus or at lunch or whatever. I don't think less of people who don't read, but I guess I would think more of people that do. I read purely for entertainment purposes but even then reading expands vocabulary, improves cognition, and improves writing and speach. Keeping up on your reading and writing is an easy way to improve these skill sets in a way that IMing your friends, "OMG hi 2 u!" doesn't. So in terms of forms of entertainment, I think it is one of the more intellectual and it also helps provide a useful, necessary, and at times much needed skill set.

I've been wanting to get into the Discworld novels but I have not been able to find The Colo(u)r of Magic in the libraries or English bookstores here. I ended up buying a copy of Thud! seeing it was Terry Pratchett but I did not realize it was still part of the Discworld series until the last day of reading it. Well, despite the break in continuity (which I didn't notice) I really REALLY wish I started reading these years ago. Sigh... all that time wasted...

Sorry, I couldn't resist. 😉

I read a lot. And as open-minded as I sometimes believe that I am, I automatically think a little less of people who don't read. I think even worse of people who don't read and are proud of the fact.

..the cell phone hiphop tweens gen say dumb is cool.

I have always read a lot. My reading habits do go through a cycle though. I'm in a slow period now and probably only read a book a week. I believe in libraries and used book stores for most of my reading. I've trimmed down my collection considerable and probably only have 1000 volumes at home.

I find it hard to read regularly, since I like reading for 3-4 hours at a time, versus 20-30 minutes, so what ends up happening is that I go some time without reading, followed by a period of near-obsessive reading many hours a day.

Fuck, did I really do that? God dammit. Well at least I didn't explicitly claim that reading improved spelling.

a book is like an ebook, but on paper right?

In twenty years this may not be so ridiculous.

I haven't read an actual book in many years (aside from textbooks). I have read a ton of ebooks and at work I listen to audio books.

I like to read in bed and holding a book just right so the lamp illuminates the page is just so damn cumbersome. A pda and an ebook with the room dark is great. I've noticed that I get into books a lot more when it's dark because there's nothing to distract me and my imagination can create very vivid images of the stories. Best way to read, imo.

I am a voracious reader.I usually have 3-4 books going at a time. I love going to Goodwill-type places to find as many books as I can, usually in the .50-1.00 range. This way I can definitely judge a book by it's cover.

Several months ago, an internet book dealer called Kudzu Books, shut down and was liquidating their assets.I am talking about two huge warehouses with 10 million books stacked on pallets floor to ceiling. I spent two whole days in that place going up and down every single aisle searching for books. My wife cannot understand how I can read that much.

Right now I am reading Stephen King's "Just After Sunset" "The Ruin of J.Robert Oppenheimer" and "Living Abroad in Costa Rica"

Peace
