I don't think it's an attention span thing. Even now I'll finish games I really get into way more than once.

Hell, I just finished FEAR for the 5th time the other day. It's like reading a good book for me.

The flip side of the coin is a game like Neverwinter Nights 2. I tried hard to force myself to keep going - mostly because I bought the version that came with Mask of the Betrayer and I wanted to get to there with a party I started from scratch. But I just couldn't do it.

I know I do. Honestly, it's sad but I've discovered (besides Star control II) that I can't finish most games either. Portal was the perfect length for me. Even the games I deem awesome such a Mass Effect and Fallout 3 only lasted perhaps 30 hours each.

I'm more of a Grind/RTS Multiplayer type of player I've decided.

It has been a while, but there was a part near the end, that I had to try a handful of times or more. It was where the combine forces are coming at you from several directions, and you have to hold them off while the chica hacks a terminal or something.

Hmm, obscenely stupid or difficult. Typhon from Titan Quest comes immediately to mind. I am convinced he was coded with a party of 4 players in mind. Taking him single handed is an exercise in frustration.

Right now I have a PC with hundreds of games spanning over 15 years and it's a bit overwhelming.
This.

When you're a kid, you probably have pretty limited means of getting new games, so you try to get the most out of what you have.

That's a good point too. I definitely own more games than I've ever owned in my life, have the means to buy pretty much any game I want to, but I don't have the time to play many of them at all.

Another issue for me is time. As a father of two active girls its challenging to find the time to play enough to do the games justice. Someone mentioned Portal - I agree it was fantastic and I HAD to finish it. Brevity is OK by me, as I too have the overwhelming number of games problem. You just can't complete every game that requires 50-100 hrs of your time - unless its great.:)

Games I have done this to:
KOTOR (got ~half way through then lost interest)
Psychonauts (25% through)
Civ4 (played 1 civ and stopped when one of my city was taken over)
Half-Life2 (didn't get past the first few stage)
Fall-Out2 (stopped after character creation)
PS:T
Oblivion (maybe 10% through)
and many others that I am forgetting

I do find that I play DOTA a lot. Also got to lvl 60 in WoW before quitting 4 months after the release.

That rarely happens to me. But it did happen with Stalker: Clear Sky. The beginning proved really hard, and I lost interest. That was about 6 months ago. Haven't played since.

KOTOR definately gets a lot better when you get off that first planet.

The last three games that I never finished were Assassins Creed, Stalker: Clear Sky, and Hellgate: London.

Hellgate: London had extremely repetitive and boring gameplay that i couldn't get into no matter how hard I tried. Maybe it would have been more fun if I used a different type of character, but the story telling and immersion just weren't there for me.

As for Stalker, I just didn't feel like playing it anymore. It felt like a chore to play after a while for some reason, even though I had played through the first one a couple times. Maybe that is why, I was tired of the gameplay or something of that effect.

As for Assassins Creed; I started playing Eve soon after I purchased the game. I probably would have played it longer otherwise. Even so, the gameplay seemed pretty repetitive to me. It kind of reminded me of playing a game on the SNES or something, and didn't really feel immersive to me. Doing things felt somewhat contrived, and it almost felt like I was playing a Metal Gear Solid game, which had the same issues when I played it.

these days i cant even pass the intro stage of games. i can't be bothered for single player, story mode/campaign anymore i'd rather just skirmish or fight it out online. multiplayer is the future!

Yep. Eve is like the anti-repetitive game, since there are thousands of things to do. If you get bored with one thing, you can easily start doing something else. When you get bored with that, you can move on to something else. There are thousands of ways to advance and keep yourself going.

Case in point: the last week I have spent most of my time playing the market. The week before, I was doing mostly PvP in gangs. The week before, I spent most of the time missioning. It is a hard game to really get bored of since it doesn't pigeon hole you into anything.

When a game is buggy I lose interest very quickly i.e. MLB 2k9. I wanted that so badly and now I want to play frisbee with it.

I think a lot of games get repetitive and after playing it just gets boring to play i.e. Assassins Creed. I love the game but its the same thing over and over.

I played FO3 for a long long time and I guess I lost interest and starting playing over games...in different genres. Right now I am in no mood to play strategy games (C&C3 CoH) so I leave that out and play different genres that sooth my mood.

Nope. If I get halfway through a game it means I like it and I'll finish it. If I quit a game it's because it sucks and that's usually much earlier. Thanks to broadband and demos even that almost never happens anymore. If I start a game for real it's because I liked the demo.

I'm trying to play "Another World" 15th anniversary edition. Granted the game is dated, but it can be hard at times and annoying. i might not finish it...

i guess i'll go back to my trusty fall back of Sim City 2000

That always happens to me. I bought so many games since like October last year, and i didn't beat most of them.

Assassin's Creed: repetitive
COD4: not spectacular single player, got bored
Crysis: not a great game overall, got bored
GTA IV: ALMOST beaten main story, last mission, not so compelled since I failed it so many times
L4D: barely played any of the campaigns, just haven't gotten around to it...mebe play now?
Mass Effect: Sort of an on and off thing, I might play soon, VERY good game
World of Goo: just haven't beaten it...dunno why

Games I have beaten in the past 9 months or so:

Fallout 3
Zeno Clash
