Do you play games partway through and then just stop?

Very rarely do I finish games. Most of the time I stop after a couple of hours in and then never pick up the game again.

Games I have done this to:
KOTOR (got ~half way through then lost interest)
Psychonauts (25% through)
Civ4 (played 1 civ and stopped when one of my city was taken over)
Half-Life2 (didn't get past the first few stage)
Fall-Out2 (stopped after character creation)
PS:T
Oblivion (maybe 10% through)
and many others that I am forgetting

I do find that I play DOTA a lot. Also got to lvl 60 in WoW before quitting 4 months after the release.

Sometimes this happens to me in certain games, but I just play through it.

There are only few games that I never finished.

That only happens to me if the game sucks or if other circumstances snowball, such as if I die without saving for a while sometimes it'll piss me off enough to stop playing for a week...then that week turns into a year. Otherwise I love seeing games through to the end.

I think that as I've gotten older I've lost a bit of my attention span when it comes to gaming. I have a number of games I've picked up (Steam weekend deals) and then either played and just stopped.. or not even played yet. Maybe games just aren't as engrossing as they used to be? I don't know. But I think I hammered out Crysis, Mass Effect, The Witcher, and some other recent games pretty quickly because I loved them so much. I'm currently forcing myself to play through STALKER:CS.

Exactly the same here. The other day I stopped playing and un-installed Hell in Vietnam...terrible game.

Assassin's Creed - repetitive.

I've never beaten guild wars, though I do like it

Yes, very often this happens. If the difficulty gets to the point where I am losing a ton then that can be a total turn off and I'll quit. It is boring... Quit... If it has programming issues, quit..

Lots of reasons to quit shitty games.

I've got a whole bunch of games that I've gotten for cheap but never finished, and I'm trying to resolve to work my way through them:

Fallout 3
Far Cry 2
Unreal, Unreal II
Half-Life 2 / Ep. 1 / Ep. 2 (I know, I know :p. I just tend to be less drawn to singleplayer FPSs. I don't feel too badly about it though, since I've gotten hundreds of hours worth of gameplay out of Orange Box via TF2.)
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident
Darkstar One

A lot of games just feel too drawn out and samey. For example, Half Life 2, i quit halfway through the driving sequence with combine and sandbug things. Too much repetition is not un, i prefer donig something new or the game to be over quickly. Also uneven difficulty. If I die/fail too many times, forget cheat codes, I quit your suupid game, especially GTA games with the chase down X character or precision maneuver this helicopter thing (the driving/flying just doesn't translate well on mouse/keyboard and I refuse to use a gamepad forthe shooting sequences)

Games i never finished:
HL2
All the GTA games ever (IDK why I still buy them, have played every one except GTA II)
Burnout Paradise
GRID (gt very, very far and the quit because the races were so similar)
Planescape Torment (I'm to stupid to finish the game, puzzles go over my head)
Oblivion (mind numbingly boring)

If I do stop it's because the game pissed me off somehow.

Fallout 3 because my character couldn't aim and missed pretty much every shot.
NFS Most Wanted because the police chase requirements got ridiculous.
GRID because it got less fun the further you got.
I'm sure there's lots others, just my memory is bad.

HL2 was a great game and still is. I don't know why you people have never finished it. I just played it through again the other day.

Unfortunately I do.

Most often it happens to me because of boredom. But sometimes after I play for a while and get into a mindless groove a game will throw a challenge at you (epic fight, puzzle) that is out of proportion in difficulty with the rest of the game (for me, anyway). Usually then I don't have the ambition to continue anymore.

Good examples for this for me:

KotOR: that big fight after you crash land on the planet where shit attacks you on all sides.

Baldur's Gate:ToB: the room where all of the statues come to life.

Other reasons I quit are losing the thread of the story after not playing for a while (happened to me several times in Morrowind) or losing the hang of complex controls (always happens to me when I try to come back to a game like Jade Empire and don't play it regularly).

seriously... I can still go through and play the whole thing, awesome game.

I am thinking maybe it is people who missed HL2 when it first came out and only recently tried it, I can see how playing a 5+ year old game might seem kinda boring.

farCry 2 is really hard to play through just because of all the traveling to and from missions. It's so repetitive...

I don't blame you on Far Cry 2. It's an awful, awful, AWFUL game.

Assassin's Creed, I stopped when I realized it was the same damn thing over and over.

Far Cry 2 is the one only one I've stopped playing through lately on purpose. Its the only game I've ever gotten motion sickness from. Otherwise I'll stop playing my fill in the time games once I get a primary game to play.

Fallout 3 was so boring that I stopped playing it for about 2 months but forced myself to finish it. Stopped doing all the boring side quests and forcing myself to hear the horrible voice acting and crappy ending.

Looking back, I think most of the games I've set aside and have had trouble completing are the ones that get a lot of coverage and/or high reviews at gaming sites, where I buy them on reputation alone instead of taking the time to try the demo. (see: Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Half-Life 2, etc)

Not sure if it's the same case with the rest of the people who've been unable to finish those games?

Just wondering is this an age thing? When I was younger I got huge thrills from even simple games (atari 2600 anyone).

i think this is mostly due to the uprise of the "sandbox" style of game design. eventually i get tired of how much time i spend just running around to places and realize it's a huge game of carrot and stick that i don't really feel all that entrenched in other than getting that carrot.

after playing wow for years i need a game with a really engrossing story line.

Maybe. Or maybe we just had different standards back then because games were less complex.

I don't know about the Atari 2600 (I wasn't alive back then, much less gaming ;)), but I remember being endless amused by pretty simple games like NBA Jam, Tetris Attack, Snood, and Ricochet (Breakout clone) as a kid. I don't think those types of games would hold my attention for more than half an hour these days.

what part was that? i don't remember anything like that in ToB.
