I've never hitchhiked.

I've only ever seen one hitchhiker... he harassed me as I was walking to my car from my office for a ride to the train station. I gave him a $10 and called a cab for him on my cellphone and drove away as fast as I legally could.

I do in the Sierras if they are decent looking, because I do hitchhike myself every now and then when I'm backpacking, and need to get off the trail and get somewhere sooner rather than later.

The only time I picked up hitchhikers was when we had gone to India and we visited a famous temple there. We had been to the temple like at around 5:00 in the morning and were driving back to our cottage when a group of around 8-10 monks were walking up the hill to go to their monastery. They asked us for a lift, and we stuffed all of them into our SUV and drove about 10 km (6 miles) to the top of the mountain and dropped them off.

It was both surreal and cool, because of the fog flitting over the hilltops that morning.

I used to hitch all the time in the early 70s.

Late 60's I spent 9 months hitchhiking around the south. back then it was fairly safe to do. I even had people buy me a burger or take me home for a meal. Times have changed. Today I don't pick up anybody unless I see a car broken down before I get to them and even then I'm proable not going to stop unless they are female or with kids.

I've done it once. A group of friends and me had walked to a bar near our motel on spring break. It was less than a mile, but on the way home it seemed a lot longer (alcohol and all). So we hitched a ride with a group of cute girls in a minivan for about the last half mile. Never saw them after that though.

I've gotten rides when I was out of gas walking to an exit, and I've picked people up in the same situation. Haven't ever actually ran into the person on the side of the road with their thumb out just trying to move down the road, but I'd pick em up if I wasn't in a hurry to get somewhere(work).

I sort of hitchhike almost everyday to get to work. Basically, people that want to use the carpool lanes on I-95 pick people like me up at commuter lots and drop us off at selected spots in the DC/VA/MD area. So I get a free ride to the pentagon and they get to use the carpool lanes with next to no hassle.

I picked up a student once to go from campus to campus. I was cordial, but made no efforts to be friendly. I wonder if she thought I was trying to pick her up (metaphorically).

All the time in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Both given rides and taken rides, haven't met anyone I knew but I usually don't go backcountry.

Yes and yes. Hitched around Europe for 7.5 months, and have some mighty Karma to pay back for it. I only pick up hitchers with a backpack though, who look like travellers, or people in the mountains heading to town etc. Around home it is rare to see travellers with a pack hitching, hell, it is rare to see travellers without an RV :p

Kind of. I was in Boston a few months ago and asked a guy if he was going to a club that a group I was with was headed to. He said yes and offered us a ride over.
