The law isn't that you can't back into a spot. The law, like the law in every other state, is that when parallel parking the vehicle must be in the same direction as traffic flow. That is to say that you cannot the car facing south off of a northbound lane for example. When parallel parking, unless on a one-way street, the driver's side MUST be the side of the car that faces the street.
I don't think he parallel parked, he just backed into a regular parking space.
The ticket was for facing traffic while parking
That would indicate to me that he was parked opposite to traffic flow.

The only other thing I can think of is if the parking spot was one of those angle spots off to the side of a street. Those cannot be legally backed into either because of severe disruption to the traffic flow when someone tries to back into them.

If he really was in a parking lot, then this ticket is complete BS though. I always back in when parking in a parking lot.

Parking backwards is a waste of time in most cases. It almost always takes longer to back into a spot and than to back out. Of course, if I can pull through to the next aisle I will do so, but in general... Anyway, I agree, it's stupid a law.

But it's safer. You can take all the time you want backing into a spot, since the stuff back there isn't moving. However, backing into moving traffic is iffy.

Backing in is a better way, IF you're not incompetent.

I went down to the parking office and they told me that it is a florida state law to park against the flow of traffic...i could understand that in a small parking space...but when you have room to just pull out even in an SUV with big turning circles...there is absolutely no need for this kind of BS harassment...

Seems like this may be a university parking rule moreso than an FL law? I know when I worked for parking when I was in college we had some sort of rule about it as well.

😕

Wait a minute... so were you parallel parked along a street?

Or were you parked so that your car was perpendicular to traffic?

Was this a private lot? Or was this on-street parking?

"Harassment"... hah!

You say "against the flow of traffic" - what kind of parking spot was this? Angled? Parallel?

Meh... seems to me you stand a greater chance of hitting one of the adjacent cars by backing in than getting hit while backing out. Plus I hate having to wait for someone to back into a spot... just drive into the spot, please. Think about the mess if everyone thought they should back into every spot. Highly inefficient. As long as you don't just come flying out of a spot you aren't likely to get hit while backing out.

You can't wait 15 seconds?

When parking forward would take 2? Why should I have to?

This is just a way for the school to make money. I'm not sure why any of you guys are arguing about laws and the methods of parking a car in a parking lot.

ATOT debates anything and everything.

Whether your park forwards or backwards, the fact remains that at some point in time, you have to back up, and that therefore someone already on the road will be inconvienced for 15 seconds.

I prefer backing into a parking space if at all possible as otherwise you usually have to blindly and slowly back out when leaving and *hope* noone is speeding down the street towards you.

I disagree. I mean it's easier to for me to back into my garage than to back out because I have better sightlines in both situations than if I were to pull into/back out of my garage. Also, most of the places I park it's the same situation so it makes sense to back in. Of course if there's traffic at all then I just pull in cuz it does save time.

Well, now you've learned that is not allowed.

Some parking lots have angled parking spaces so that you can only get in from one direction, if you back in when you pull out you will be driving the wrong way down a one way parking aisle, you wouldn't drive the wrong way down a one way street and complain about getting a ticket for that would you? Same thing, the problem isn't really with your car sitting still, the problem is what happens when you pull out and drive the wrong way down a one way aisle which may or may not have enough room for two cars.

Then the parking office probably was lying to you... it's not a Florida law, rather a University-parking lot rule intended to extract even more money from their students and employees.

I guess it's a question of perspective. I trust my own driving+parking abilities more than the average moron who's cruising down the street at twice the limit and not looking for people backing up. I'd prefer to keep the control in my hands, since I know I'm good at parking. Now, would I want your average 16-year-old in an SUV to be backing into their parking spots? Hell no.

Wow, my university wouldn't be able to pull this off. The main parking lot is the parking lot for the football stadium, so needless to say it is just a huge space with nothing in it. 90% of the people pull in through the same entrance and pull up all the way to the front and park forwards. Then the cars pull in behind and park regularly behind them, with the next row of cars pulling up parking forwards in the stall behind them. 90% of the cars are all facing the same direction.

They could have at least a sign posted somewhere...

No, if you watch, or simply do it yourself, it clearly takes longer in almost every situation to back into a spot than to back out. Why? Because often when you back in the spot will have adjacent cars on one or both sides. You are backing into a much smaller space than when you back into an aisle... this almost always takes longer since you have to be more careful. Yeah, some people here are going to claim that they do it just as fast, but most people here are full of it and claim to be experts at everything.

Since the intended purpose of the rule is to generate revenue, I don't think you can expect them to spend money on a sign which would only serve to decrease their source of income.
