It seems like this is the one thing that if everyone else does, you're almost at a disadvantage if you don't at the very least pad it just a bit. Obviously it's silly to put in a job that you never had or say that you attended a school you never went to, but it's not a terribly difficult task to fib a bit.
Also, if you can't lie properly, then you may just not deserve the job being offered
