Do you overclock?

Well my "e-penis" likes the extra exercise. It helps keep it strong!

Aside from my "e-penis", I never really saw any reason to overclock until recently. When I realized that I could get my 2.8Ghz P4 up to 3.42Ghz without spending so much as 1 cent, the savings over a 3.4Ghz chip are reason enough. That, plus with the increased FSB, my P4 flails a stock 3.4Ghz P4.

As far as games crashing... quite the opposite. My games run smoother with the increased speed. I just don't go overboard and clock the hell out of it. I do a modest overclock, keeping temps within 3 degrees of stock.

As far as equipment failure, people generally overclock for years without an issue. Considering that the average existing computer user replaces their computer every 3 years, worrying about failure 10+ years out is of little concern. Back in 1993, the Cyrix 486DX-50 was the shhit to own. Now, it's just shhit.

Point being, unless you go nuts with overclocking, the computer will be beyond obsolete when possible equipment failure comes into play.

Overclocking increases the performance you get for a given price. No downside when done properly.

I do like to OC, but due to having a damn VIA chipset with no AGP lock & crappy RAM, i am currently not OCing.

What about proper cooling? Gotta spend time and money there.

As far as cooling, I must be honest. I purchased a 30 cent (yes, it's true) thick plastic cup that I am using to channel fresh air directly over the HSF. The fans I used were left over from old cases/projects. So, yes I did run up a 30 cent tab. ;-)

My Kingwin Case was already running 5 80mm fans, along with 2 in the power supply, for a total of 7. I added three more 80mm fans and a 92mm fan and things are nice and frosty...

meaningless correlation given the poll questions.

It is not meaningless at all. Most people not only overclock, but use AMD. The numbers are very comparable. I clicked no to OC and yes to Intel, while most others clicked the opposite. From responses you can even see that people with AMD OC more than people with intel, heck I'm willing to wager most people with intel don't even bother to check this thread 😛

XP-M 2500+ @ 2.7
not at all a free OC, as i ended up spending a pretty decent amount on cooling for it. however, the cooling will work fine on K8 when i move to it, so it is not wasted money.

Suppose there were 100 respondents. 25 use Intel 75 use AMD.

75 of them overclock, 25 of them don't.

100% of intel respondents could overclock, meaning only 50% of the amd respondents overclock.

or, none of the intel respondents overclock, meaning all of the amd respondents overclock.

either way you would get the numbers in this poll.

But we already know that 100% isn't right. I voted intel and I don't OC. Most people that actually posted said AMD and OC. A couple said intel. The numbers speak for themselves. Sorry it's hard to grasp for you. You wouldn't happen to run a site called Tom's Hardware would you? Wouldn't surprise me.

P4 2.26@2.66 since I got it uhh.. umm.. 2 years ago? It still runs fine. I'd go higher but my mobo don't like me doing that.

My geforce 4600 is also overclocked from 300/650 to 340/750 since this rig was tossed together.

I used to overclock my old p3 450. It ran at 600mhz and I have a TNT2 in it. It was something like 143/220 stock and I had it running at 200/330. The card started to artifact at the end, but it never died. I can't believe it didn't, the thing could burn your skin it ran so hot.
