I've bought everal generics off of ebay. Pretty much 1 for every phone I've had for the past several years. But the local news picked up a story a few months ago about generic batteries starting fires with cell phones a few months ago (Christmas time maybe?). But I take anything the news says with a grain of salt... Haven't had to buy another since, but when I do, I'll probably head right back to ebay. I can usually find a longer lasting battery there than the OEM ones for 1/5th the price or less.

You should believe it in this case - it was true and effected a number of Verizon phones.

Their batteries right out of the box lacked the "overcharge protection" chip and they'd explode on the battery charger occasionally. The news stories at the time said that a lot of counterfit/generic batteries had the same problem. It was mostly Kyoceria phones that were affected.

I've been kind of hestitant to buy generic batteries since that cropped up last year. I have one for my LG phone, but I only charge it when I'm around to watch it and then I use my desk charger without the phone on it just in case. I use the factory battery for everything, the extra battery is for long camping trips when I'll be without power to charge my main.

Overcharging a battery will not make it explode unless the charger is defective or not dumb (meaning it is not peak detecting, etc.)

Yes, I buy generics for my digital camera, cell phone, ham radio, etc.
