<< You might want to think about requesting a quiet floor if you get bothered by noise. It's a given that somebody will be blaring a stereo for most of the day and a good part of the night otherwise. >>

No kidding, and even if you get a quiet floor, if your RA is a slacker someone might take advantage of it...last year I was in a quiet floor and the guy next to us would blare his music at all times of the day, to the point where it shook the walls, and he'd turn it up real loud, lock his door and then go take a shower...or he'd have some stupid trance thing on at like 8AM when I'm trying to sleep...grr!

As far as people stealing your stuff, keep your room locked, keep any cool and small gadgets out of sight, and that should do it. Your clothes won't be stolen unless you have expensive designer clothes or something...know some people who had those stolen, but since I just bum around in jeans and a t-shirt, my clothes have never been stolen.
If you leave your door unlocked, however, that's practically an invitation to come in and take stuff (depending on the size of your school, the truth of that statement varies - at some really small schools you really don't have to worry about that sort of thing).

Definitely be respectful. Sometimes it helps if you're not in the room all the time. I have an off-campus job so I'm gone a lot, but some of my friends stay on campus for weeks at a time. And don't hesitate to tell your roommate right away when something's bothering you, it's best to deal with it right away then to let it sit.

Squeeze yourself in a closet for a few days to fully acclimate yourself. If you like it, you'll LOVE the dorm.

I'm not kidding. Maybe lock yourself in this closet with the smelliset a$$hole known to the free world and you'll get the true flavor of the hell we call "dorm".

If the pain is worth the gain.........good luck.

You'll have a great time, just be open to new things and ideas. It can be tough adjusting to all the different ways people live and thier standards. I made some really good friends in my years at University.

I live in a dorm but they're singles...no room mates! Hmm...some basic advice...

-leave your door open often for the first few weeks to meet everyone on your floor
-bring booze
-hang out and party with your floormates early, get friendly with everyone
-make a list of everything you'll ever need so you don't forget anything
-febreze...lots and lots of febreze
-come with an open mind and have lots of fun
