Do you open your CRT and adjust the focus??

Every CRT I have used for any length of time, I pop open the case and look for the adjusters marked 'focus' and with a few turns, I have a much sharper picture with every little effort.
Gotta be careful, you can kill yourself if you touch the wrong component. But if you have an otherwise good monitor with a fuzzy picture, it may just be a simple twist with a small screwdriver.

You = smart

A CRT is many times more dangerous than an opened computer powersupply, and is not user serviceable.

Aircooled, if you are comfortable and careful making a few adjustments, more power to you

I used to repair moniters at my old job.

I remember someone asked me to take a look at the power supply for a CRT and I held my hand out and he just placed it in my palm. It hummed and my arm went numb as a cap discharged into my hand. :D

Like I said. Be careful.

But those adjusters are there for a reason. (yeah, for qualified technicians to turn them) :)

I'm a dumbass, and remove the cover while the monitor is on, find the 'focus' adjusters and tune them while I'm looking at the screen.

not dead yet! :) (keyword = yet)

[whisper] shhh, don't tell anyone, but it's not that scary... 4 screws, remove cover, do not touch anything except plastic adjusters with screw heads. you still may f*ck up your monitor, but if its old and blurry, you may actually maKe it better.... :)

edit:
again, don't do it if you are intimidated by it. but you may get many more miles out of your existing CRT with a few minimal screw turns..

Turn the brightness down a little and that also will improve the focus..

Use a screwdriver with a long rod, wrap the rod with electrical tape, and you should be ok.

I wonder why they don't just put those focus screws on the outside of the monitor... although I do understand why you can't put it into the digital menu because of the physical aspect of it.

Hmm.. I don't think my monitor is blurry, or I'd dig in.

You aren't going to be electrocuted by opening your monitors backing. Geesh. Grow some balls, people.:p

<-- using a ADI ProVista 15" that has literally been on 24/7 since I bought it 4 1/2 years ago.

I opened this particular one up (viewsonic e773) looking for some brightness controls. It is so damn dark by defualt! I have to crank up the gamma setting at the driver, but that doesn't help in games as the games take over the video setting.

Never found a brightness control, but played with the focus and it is way sharper than before.

digicam is on loan right now, no pics :(

I wouldn't do it unless it is obiously blurry. I've f'd up a few monitors too :)
The adjusters are very obvious, and most of the time labeled. can't even find any web pics and that's how I learned about it initially.

Only if you don't need the screwdriver, anymore. With 25,000 or more volts running around in there, you could zap off the tip of the screwdriver. If you're lucky you won't get a chunk of molton steel in the face.

I've been inside monitors and TV sets. It helps to know what you're doing.

There are serious safety issues with opening a CRT monitor, this isnt a PC where the max voltage is 12V, There is a 30kV voltage applied to the CRT, and there may be as high as 1000V EXPOSED in the monitor..

Yea you can safely adjust it, but it is dangerous and alot of caution should be used

Yes, this is not one of those cases where people are like "ohhh don't play with your car stereo, it'll shock you" or "ohhh 110v can kill you easy" the voltages inside a monitor (even one that has been turned off for a while) can really F you up.

I'm not saying I've never done it, but fooling around inside a monitor ESPECIALLY if you don't have a good reason, is just plain dumb.

I've noted the safety issue from the start. Don't open your CRT if you are intimidated by it.

I'm just saying that there are very simple adjustments that can make for a much better viewing experience.

Many CRT TV's have the focus and master brightness controls on the exterior of the set for just this reason
