No, I have nothing to be worried about, because I'm not a criminal. But if all it takes is to declare you an "enemy combatant", then what? "Joe Blow no longer has any constitutional rights. We think he's an enemy of the state." Fun place we live.

This is an extraordinarily dangerous way of thinking. It's sad to see that it has become so popular, especially among people who are supposed to be intelligent, such as posters on a tech forum (I see it a lot here).

The "If you have nothing to hide, why do you care?" reasoning is NOT justification for this crap.

Do you care if the FBI comes to your house at any time they want and ransack it?

If you have nothing to hide why should you care?

How the hell did this reasoning become so freaking mainstream?

Interesting article... but no different than them planting bugs or listening to phone calls, imo. The FBI has to keep up with the times.

Now, if they were just randomly doing this without search warrants then id have a problem. This doesnt appear to be the case, though.

No way, if we let that happen, what next?

For the record to the tickleholes, I was merely stating what reasoning behind the masses will be.

I'm talking about a HARD BYPASS switch, like an on/off rocker, that would effectively disconnect the microphone. It could be toggled by the user.

Edit -- Moto Razr, Nextel, and some Samsung phones confirmed (listenable)!

Take the batteries out....

Yes, it's another nifty tool they can use to fight crime -- war on drugs, war on terror, etc. We have all these wars we're fighting, but none have a specific enemy. We're simply fighting "drugs" and those we determine to be "enemies of the state". I suppose the Jews just were "enemies of the state" -- the Nazi party, right?

nice, pull the nazi card

I don't object, as long as it is limited to the suspect's phone. If they start using my phone's microphone to eavesdrop on my friends or coworkers, that I'd have a problem with.

IF t hey have a court order to eavesdrop on someone then fine. long as they only use his phone.

but if they do it ot anyone who they do not have a order to then no.

They don't need a search warrant. They just need to believe you are an "enemy of the state". Well that the heck does that mean? When does it become, "I disagreed with something the government said, and now I'm an 'enemy of the state'..."

I'm kinda stingy, so I use SMS for most communication....and valuable call minutes for hot, dirty phone sex. But I don't live in Ameriga so this is all irrelevant to me.
