Yes, I have. I can literally go MONTHS swimming at my gym pool before seeing any talent. It's about 80% old people doing their walking or whatever the hell they do as they slough their old person bits into water.

Is that why you're there? To see some talented swimmers? :whiste:

As one of the "fat people in the pool," I know that with my FUBAR'd knee and back, it's the only way I can get any meaningful exercise. Low impact water aerobics are great for those of us with injuries...or fat...or both.

I don't care if you are fat or skinny, if you are at the gym to honestly do a workout, good for you.

I don't like the people who go to the gym just to screw off and take up space. They are the ones that need to gtfo. Generally speaking, the ones there to screw off are skinny ones who think that being genetically skinny makes them better than someone who is not.

The flip side of that is the skinny waif that comes into the gym, spends an hour walking briskly on the treadmill, and then leaves. I can understand that there are benefits to be had from adding a little cardio to your daily routine, but if you're 90 pounds to start with this is not going to significantly improve your quality of life. Eat something, limit your treadmill time, use the extra time lifting weights.

I know I'm being sarcastic...but for real reals...when I was there everyone was a skinny looking hipster walking down the street. The only fat peope were American tourists.

A lot fat people use cardio machines for like 5 minutes and then stop. While normal people stay on one for 30-60 minutes.

How do they feel accomplished at doing 5 minutes of cardio?

I just hate to see people wasting their time. Not enough to actually say anything to them about it unless they ask me, of course. But if you really wanted something, wouldn't you put in enough effort mentally to know you were making steps toward acquiring it? These people are fooling themselves, and its sad to see.

Ever think that these people assume they are doing it correctly? If someone has never lifted before and is just starting, they might not know there are proper techniques. All they know is they've seen someone lifting weights and are mimicking the motions. Do you really need to judge them for something they aren't aware of?

They would very quickly be aware of it if they did any research. The second result from a google search for "weight lifting" is a beginners guide with pretty good information. People who aren't too internet savvy may not know to do anything more than a google search, so I won't get into the wealth of resources that can be found on message boards. If it's someone who doesn't know anything at all about the internet, they could walk into a book store or library and find all they need in the fitness aisle.

The fact that they didn't shows that they aren't really interested in doing it right. I know I would never walk into a gym with no idea what to do at all. Do they expect the other gym members to be their personal trainers? Actually they probably don't even expect to be in the gym more than a month or two before writing it off as "tried but failed", which is why they never bother to learn anything.

My point is that they might not be aware there is a right way and a wrong way. I can easily see how someone might think that all you do is lift weights into the air and good things happen. They don't know there's a technique to it, so expecting them to search for something they don't know exists is a bit much.

There's more than one way to perform a lift. I think most powerlifters do the low bar squat because they get that hamstring bounce at the bottom. A lot of bodybuilders will do the high bar squat because it works the quads more. Also I think Rippetoe says to look focus at a point on the ground in front of you when you squat but Wenning from EliteFTS suggests the opposite in his video series.

Bad form is definitely an issue but most people are just trying to learn on their own. Not always easy to tell if you're doing something wrong. There's a lot of information out there. There's some really good and some really bad videos on youtube.
