Do you need to reformat when going from single core to dual core (amd64)

I heard when going from p4 to p4 hyper-threading with Intel you needed to reformat Windows (xp-sp2) to get running at maximum potential.

Is it the same with single core to dual core with AMD64?

Thank you,

Heck idunno.. i went from 3200 winchester to 165 opteron... both cores run good, but i need new memory to overclock... In order for it to work no... u dont need to format

XP adjusted from uniprocessor to multiprocessor automatically for me when I upgraded my 3000 Winnie to an Opterpwn 165.

reformating is a geek badge of honor. it is often pointless. i've benched fresh installed windows vs old installs when switching hardware underneath windows and the differences are astoundingly minute.

Usually you notice speed increase when you have only the o/s on it 🙂 Then you put all your useless junk back on and hey... back to normal!!

So there sould be not software side to dual core operation, opposed to this..

Although Windows 2000 is compatible with Hyper-Threading Technology, we expect customers will get the best performance from Hyper-Threading Technology using Windows .NET Server. This is because the Windows .NET Server Family is engineered to take full advantage of the logical processors created by Hyper-Threading Technology.

right?

thanks,

Its advisable to reinstall so you don?t have any issues with any software drivers etc. But saying that myself and a lot of other people on here, found when switching to a dual core you did not need to reformat. Reason being as JC has said:

Windows XP will simply detect the change in hardware and load the correct HAL accordingly.

I only recommend reformatting if you have any issues after installing the correct drivers and updates etc. Otherwise just leave it be, it saves a lot of time and hassle.
