Do you need to have an IDE hard drive?

I have it in the sATA1 slot on the mobo...is that the wrong one? I've tried the sATA2 slot as well with no luck...should i have it in the sata_raid1 or sata_raid2 slot?

there's the note 'by default the raid connector is set as raid if you want to use it as an independent drive set the operation mode to ide mode under the advanced menu' so does that mean i should plug it into 'sata_raid1' and then go into the bios, turn the onboard promise controller to enabled, and then select 'IDE' for mode?

Promise drivers. extract what's inside the winxp folder inside this file onto a floppy

as for the drivers, does it have to be on a bootable floppy? or just a normal one?


so I put the sata cable on the sata_raid1 socket (that's on page 2-25).....then I disable the via sata, and then reboot and put in the disk with the drivers from that file?
 
yah, the red ones lol those are the sata_raid1 and sata_raid2 slots....so i plug the sata cable into sata_raid1, reboot, go into the bios....turn off promise?.....and then reboot with those drivers on a disk in the floppy
 
ooh! progress!

alright, i put it on the sata_raid1, i got some new messages (not errors)....now i have this disk with the drivers on it...do I just stick that in the floppy drive on the computer and reboot now?

i just don't get how to get the drivers install from the disk.......


also, when i reboot it says something about hitting f8 to enter fast-build or something, i looked it up in the manual, it's something to do with configuring raid arrays (section 5.6.2 and 5.6.3 in the manual)
 
You aren't gonna run a raid so no need to go into that. (F8)

The driver disk is for windows!
You boot from the windows xp cd and when it says f6 on the bottom you hit f6
then it will ask for you the driver disk!
Make sure the cd rom is set as the first boot device
then when the first part of the windows setup is done, (when it reboots) go back into the bios and change the 1st boot device to the SATA
 
alright, so leave the cd-rom on the primary ide master.....make it first in boot order, i have the promise thing enabled, set to IDE, and the sata cable in the sata_raid1 slot.....man i hope this works
 
awesome! i go into the bios now and the sata drive is in the boot order list....thanks for the help man, most ppl would've given up...i'm gonna go try now and see if this works, I'll let you know if I'm successful soon
 
hmmm 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key' that's with the win xp cd in the cd drive....could my xp cd be shot?
 
did you run the first part of windows setup? Until you do the first boot device need to be the cd-rom
You can leave the cd-rom as the first boot device too, also make sure the SATA is 2nd boot device
It will say 'press any key to boot from cd-rom'
Do the the first time,
windows setup will start
will say 'press F6 blah blah' on the bottom, press f6
will ask for driver disk
should then detect your hard drive
format it ntfs(quick)
ithen start installing windows on it
it will copy files then reboot
this time when it says 'press any key to boot', don't. windows setup will continue from the hard drive
 
hmmm nope, windows xp install wont' even start.....it just detects the sata drive on startup, then it goes and reads from the cd-rom then spits out the 'reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key' message...hmmmm
 
Is it a real pressed disc? Windows XP Pro or home? Oem or retail?

Got a boot disc with cd-rom drivers? Can it read the cd? Can you read the cd ok on the computer you're on right now?
The the cd-rom hooked up properly? disc is on it's right side?
 
Now is the time for the F6 key and let XP recognize the Drive but I'm bowing out of this thread because I personally think ribbon13 has done one helluva job with patience and knowledge by helping you and think he deserves to be rewarded in some kinna way 😉...to go ribbon13!
 
hahahaha, yah the cd reads fine on this comp....now the bios detects my cd-rom just fine in the new computer...but that doesn't neccesarily mean that it's hooked up correctly i suppose....i guess i'll have to check the jumper settings on it after....i got it OEM, no manual or anything...didn't think it'd be an issue...go figure
 
So the optical drive shows up correctly in the BIOS, and your sure it's set to the first boot device?

So the disc, is it XP? Pro or home?

I could guide you though slipstreaming SP2 and making sure it's a bootable cd.
 
where'd you learn all this stuff anyway? I feel like a complete nooooob again

yah if you could help me make sure this cd is bootable that'd be great too,
