I am planning on going on a road trip with my friends to seattle/canada for spring break. anyways i went there last year and we didn't need passports (we went by car) and just had to show our driver's licenses. just wondering if things have changed since 9/11 and if they are more stricter. some people i know said that a passport IS required now which means i'm screwed since i don't have one and spring break is 2 weeks away 🙁

Yeah, I'd hate to let a spring break go by without seeing that fun-in-the-sun hotspot called Canada 😉

Hi there!

I travel on a regular basis from Canada to the US. While many agents will let you through with a birth certificate or a citizenship card, I personally would not take that chance as technically, they now want to see passports since September 11.

It is easy to get one though. Get the picture taken and go to a passport office. Hopefully you have one nearby. If not, I think you can get it "expressed" if you want to pay. 🙂

Good luck! 😀

As far as I know all that you have to have on you besides your drivers license is your birth certificate just in case. I go to Canada a lot and I haven't had a problem.

My friends and I have gone over a few times since Sept. 11th (mostly just to buy REALLY strong beer) and have had no problems with just our drivers licenses. You don't need a passport. Do bring your birth cert. just in case though. I've never heard of anyone personally being asked for it, but it's good to have.
The only bridge I cross however, is the peace bridge here in Buffalo, so all of this may not fly with the grade at other points of entry.

Yup...I got mine two weeks after I applied for an express one. But you'll be cutting it awfully close 😕

i just went to Canada last weekend and only required my birth certificate and drivers license. The Casino in Windsor is the only place tht actually wanted to see my birth certificate, though.

I went to Buffalo in December.

Three of us in the car, going to an Ozzy concert and none of us were asked for any forms of ID. I was expecting more hassle than that.

Anyway, you should be fine with driver's license + birth certificate. Either way, it's not a bad idea to get a passport.

You are much better off with a passport, but you still stand a very good chance of getting in a birth certificate and drivers license.

One note - do NOT try to enter again if they don't let you (I mean cicle round and try another booth, or even another border crossing) - they scan your license plate when you try to cross and it comes up on the screen all the times that car has crossed or tried. The 2nd agent will see a big "Barred from crossing - Today's Date" on the screen and it could well be big trouble!

Only if you're really tan, named Mohamed, and wearing a pilot's uniform? J/K, I don't think you need a passport, just a DL and BC.

aw ok, i will try with the driver's license then and if i can find my birth certificate i will bring that too. and if i get stuck in canada, i will blame every single one of yous!!!

😛

i'm a canadian, we don't care who comes here. take your student ID, that should be sufficiant. Getting back in2 the states will be the fun part.

To paraphrase Jay Leno:

If your first name is "Mohammed", and your last name is not "Ali": Plan on spending a little extra time for your border crossing.

Bring your ID and Birth Certificate.. I used to go to Windsor all the time. Sometimes you need them and sometimes you don't. But if they ask, you better have them.

Bull! See those thousands of trucks clogging the bridges? 99% of them have no passport...The only ones that do are not US citizens and here for the jobs.

Birth Cert and Drivers License and then I'll be REALLY surprised if you ever are asked to show either...have fun!
