in the past you only needed a driver's license but since 9/11 i think you'll need a passport to re-enter the US.

not sure though.

You need a drivers license to drive. A passport is just a means of personal identification, and has nothing to do with the ability or legallity of driving a motor vehicle.

He was asking if he needed the passport to go across the boarder(not by plane), not if he needed it to drive.

My experience is that it's completely random. Sometimes they don't care, other people do.

I've only really had problems coming back from Canada. Most want proof of birth/citizenship in the US. I've also had people just check my license.

I've been in and out of Canada at least twice..no passport. A DL & birth certificate should be fine, IIRC..

There's a new law requiring you a passport to cross Canadian or Mexican border. Birth certificates won't work anymore.

WTF? Why do people feel this urge to give out false information? For fun?

No, you don'y need a passport to drive to Canada from the U.S. - YET. You need TWO pieces of identification with you, though, and that is all... Birth certificate and driver's license, for instance.

Passports will be required as of January 1st, 2006... in response to a similar move by the U.S. government against Canadian citizens.

I went last fall, and all we needed was gov't issued ID. It took about 3 minutes of questioning both going into Canada and coming back into the US. However, you avoid the majority of the questions if you have a passport.

I don't think they care going into Canada, but you could have problems trying to come back.
