do you need a case at all?

i would suggest atleast rigging together some sort of mobo tray and some stands for fans, but you dont need a case, it just tends to protect and organize the computer

operating the computer without case fans was something i wanted to know about. can you do that without big trouble?

If you have a cool-running system (such as something built around the VIA C3, Athlon Mobile Barton, or Pentium-M), yes.

If you have a hot-running system such as a P4 PresHott, brace for system meltdown.

so if an athlon 64 system is open air it still needs an extra fan in addition to the heat sink fan and power supply fan and video card fan?

As you say, you have a fan on your CPU and one on your graphics card. Everything else needs the case and the fans for cooling. Hard drives and RAM are some examples.
Without that, there will be dead warm air around those components.

Sure it can be done, I've seen pix of quite a few "shadow box" PCs out there. But it should only be done as a show display or some such - not as an every-day workhorse. People are supposed to prevent RFI/EMI as best they can. Otherwise, if it interferes with nearby equipment, the FCC truck could pull up in your parking lot...

just sit your comp next to your airconditioning vent, but if the room is rather cool then the only problem is lack of security, you dont want a motherboard lying around ungaurded for your younger sibbling to spill their cokes on...

Yes, you do need a case.

Case acts as an air duct, to flow moving air over your expensive components to cool them.

Components on an open board, or even in a case with its side left open, don't get necessary airflow for adequate cooling.

Maybe if you have a strong fan blowing across an open board, it might (or might not) be o.k.

Also, and secondary to airflow, case shields away kitty, kiddie fingers, bugs, etc.
And...whatta fashion statement!

Yes you need a case.

I was thinking about mounting all the parts on the wall, would look kinda cool in my office.

Why not on the ceiling over your bed? Put your 20" led monitor up there too!
