Since my network is Called BORG_HIVE and since every machine that gets plugged into it is assigned an IP by DHCP all machines on the network in my house have Borg designations. The main machine is BORG_QUEEN. the rest are # of 14. Thats how many ports I have open on the switches.

I'm not terribly original with my compute names. The two that are mine personally are an older IBM PS/2 that I call "Little Blue", and my ThinkPad A21p that I call "Dark Blue". Both are just alterations of "Big Blue". I do name my cars though. My 1988 Accord is "Lara", and my 1976 914 "driving restoration" is "Lorelei". Lorelei has special meaning, since it's the name for the siren in Germanic myth who lured sailors to their deaths along the Rhine. Seemed to be an appropriate name for a German car that claims a large portion of my income.

i dont normally name my comp, but if its acting up...it has more names than i can think of right now =)
the most common name for it in that case is "you stupid piece of ****!" umm, yeah, thats about all i gots to say =)

We have dozens on our network and our IT guy ( a fellow AnandTech'er ) had the original idea of naming them after StarWars characters. Pretty original I'd say.

<< My current system is called "Piece of sh**", since I am always saying, "You goddamn Piece of sh**". But that`s only been its name since I put WinXP on it. 🙂 >>

My old roommate named one of his computers "Jiggly Puff." I thought that was funny...and sad at the same time...

<< Only sick people name their computers... >>

I find that humanish names are a lot easier to distinguish, compared to stuff like "PIII-450," "P4-1.4," "WRKGRP908," etc. I always pick short names, but names of varied length and consonant/vowel ratios, so I can instantly recognize the difference in "network neighborhood." One thing I miss from Irix: the ability to associate easily a unique icon with each computer. You can do it in Win98, but it's a kludge.
