Do you make fun of people for saying "hella"?

Until this year, I didn't know that hella could be used with nouns as well as verbs. As in "I have hella jeans". My roommate says that all the time. He also has "hella jackets".

It's times like these I wish there was a Thread/Message Rating that said "NEF" on it

Just use your imagination with the sunglasses guy

"hella" is better than "hecka"

i say hella occasionally.. not very often though. its pretty dumb. But i dont make fun of people who say it.

<< yes all the time, those stupid North Cal people 😀 >>

I, as the person who started this thread, resent that statement.

Yep...Well that's what happens.

My roommate has this saying: "A frog doesn't piss in the water he swims in"

You sir, pissed in the water that all of us Bay Area folk swim in 🙁

I'm from Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz you get made fun of for saying hella, because it makes it painfully obvious that you're from the valley (or wherever) and you're there to make the beaches crowded and clog up freeways, or stop in traffic, with your car stretched across both the straight and left turn lanes, as you try and read your map.

Now that I'm in Sacramento, I'm surrounded by "hella"...

NOTE: In Santa Cruz, we don't hate tourists, lots of us like them, as they bring a lot of money to the local economy. However, we still find it annoying when they stop in traffic, and we still like to make fun of them for saying "hella".

That is solely the Northern Cali accent right? A proud NorCali here, and I do NOT say hella or hecka. I do have friends that do. In protest to the SoCali's, when speaking about the freeway system, it's 101, not THE 101. 😛

Yes, I make fun of these types of people all the time. I constantly refer them to dictionary.com and tell them to find that word for me.

I'm fum Cleveland. WORD! In Cleveland ya' dig made fun uh fo' sayin' hella, cuz' it makes it painfully obvious dat youse fum Parma (o' wherever) and youse dere t'make da damn beaches crowded and clog down freeways, o' stop in traffic, wid yo' wheels stretched across bod de straight and left turn lanes, as ya' try and eyeball yo' map. Jes hang loose, brud.

I didn't realize "hella" was a NorCal thing until I went to visit a friend at UC Santa Barbara, and everyone said "Are you from Northern California?" after we said "hella." I had no idea.

yeah most southern californians will run into "hella" once they start going to college if they haven't already...and most of them will be like "wtf is wrong with those nor cal people?" and then after about a quarter at school they will start using the word as well 😀
