Do you lose OnDemand if you switch to Windows Media Center?

So I want to set up a good HTPC that will connect to my digital cable box and get all the channels in WMC. It seems pretty straight-forward but I'm wondering what will happen to the interactive stuff like OnDemand?

Would I still get the OnDemand "channel" and be able to view everything or would I just get the traditional TV channels? Its pretty much a deal breaker if I lose OnDemand.

A HTPC is meant to replace a cable box, it doesn't "connect to it"...and no you wouldn't be able to do on demand and you would lose all digital channels that aren't broadcast in the clear

If you went with a cable card setup and ditched the tuner, then yes, you'd lose on demand.

If you got a Hauppage HD-PVR and connected your cable box to it and recorded the cable box with that, then no, you'd lose no functionality. But that would be pretty pointless.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that, if you're interested in building a HTPC, you can probably find ways around needing on demand movies through the cable company...

Just sayin'.

"OnDemand" (I'm guessing you mean from Comcast as that is their trademark) - is no big loss. Netflix and Hulu and Amazon VOD, and all the rest more than fill that gap. Besides the CC OnDemand looks like absolute garbage compared to even the most rudimentary streaming service. (Netflix).

So short answer - yes - you lose OnDemand. Long answer - it was not that much lost.

Pay-Per-View though - esp if you are a sports nut - that might be worth keeping a cablebox subscribed in the house.

Forgot about cable card options, that would keep all the channels...the rest still applies though. On demand was pretty nice when I had Time Warner cable, could find most network broadcast shows on it which allowed me to catch some shows that ran when I already had 2 others being recorded by my DVR, being that I had to switch to DirecTV recently I really can't say that I miss it all that much...YMMV

Thanks for the help. I guess the cable box is staying.

WMC's channel guide is so much more slick though. I wish there was a way to have it all!
