Yeah I've talked to them quite a bit before. Our last two custodial guys I've talked to quite a bit. They're just like everybody else but they have different jobs. I don't look down on them.

No I don't. Imagine what the world would be without them. The fact that they're willing to take out your thrash demands great respect for them. They're human too. I respect them like I respect others. :)

i say hello
why would you look down on them?
they perform important work, would you like to have to clean your own cubes/bathrooms?

anybody that does a job well deserves respect, they could after all, be lazy bums and not have jobs

that's awfully mean to look down on people... I could look down on somebody for being a pr0n actor but not for being a custodian..

sure they aren't doing the most plesant thing, but if it's what keeps them providing for their family and puts food on the table, what the hell right?

They're just as nice of people as anybody else...

I don't look down on anybody earning an honest living. (BTW, they make more than paramedics)

Ever seen Scrubs? LOL

Some of the State custodial workers around here make a lot more money than other state workers, and significantly more if they rise the ranks to a supervisory position.

I always do! (talk with them) We are lucky to have some of the most hard working and considerate staff where I am right now, so I make a point of thanking them and chatting with them as I would any other colleague. They actually work much harder and with far less status than most of the alleged "important" folks they "serve". Same when I was in college -- I made friends with many of the staff and I was so grateful after my roomate and I were being stalked by a pervert, some of the older Hispanic men (custodians) actually came to our house and helped secure it from future attack. So sweet and definitely not part of their job description :)

I don't look down on them. I talk to them and try to be friends, but when they come into my office to empty the trash I do feel a bit uncomfortable (guilty?) because I have a professional job and they are doing the dirty work. I know I shouldn't but I do sometimes.

The comic strip "Frazz" is a nice reminder that cleaning is what they do for a living not who they are.

Also, many artists, writers and musicians have to work a "real" job until they reach a certain level of success (if ever). You can't even judge whether a person has a creative or intellectual side by what their day job happens to be.

But I do have to remind myself of that sometimes, it's easy to assume that because I'm a software developer I "must be" smarter than the guy delivering my pizza or emptying the trash. Not "better," just smarter, but I'm still assuming so without any real reason besides their choice of employment.

Smarter may not be the word. at least where I have been, most of the people are immigrants, or second generation. It was probably what they did to make ends meet when they first arrived, or what their families have traditionally done. I'm sure over time some of their children will begin to break out of that somewhat and get better educations and opportunities.

Here at work I usually chat with the custodial staff as they do their daily routine. (it helps that some of them are HOT. :D)

But seriously though, they are generally friendly people who are just doing their job. I have no reason to look down on them.
