I've loved metal ever since I first heard Master of Puppets, which is still my favorite album.

One band I haven't seen mentioned yet is Protest the Hero. I've got their first two albums and I can listen to them back-to-back without skipping over a track. They're a technical/progressive metal group and just amazing.

Baroness is also a good grunge/stoner metal band.

Nightwish is amazing ... Tuomas Holopainen really knows how to write music!
There are a good number of other symphonic metal bands, some with pretty decent vocals too ...

Check out Stream of Passion and Ambeon ... neither one is heavy or very "metal" .... but the guy who writes the music is a genious :)
If you like either one of those, then you'll need to listen to some Ayreon and Star One :)

The Gathering (stuff from the 90s, newer stuff isn't metal, but you might like it anyhow), Lacuna Coil is awesome.
Lots of people like Within Temptation, I like some stuff, but others I just can't get used to the super high pitch suprano vocals.
Quite a few others out there too .... You could probably even just go to youtube and view nightwish and look at what comes up as being similar ....

A lot of excellent bands int his post. Also check outAfter Forever and Epica

I'm not much into death metal, but In Flames is awesome!

I love metal however I think trance is my favorite genre. I try to keep my tastes varied though.

I also believe metal and trance are an awesome listening combination.

You cannot appreciate the beautiful melodic breakdowns or soft moments without the intensely aggressive counterpart and vice versa. That's at least how I look at it.

I don't know if everyone else feels the same about it but that's how I interpret it.

I couldn't get into ISIS but I was immediately sold on Opeth. I think you summarized it well. I think if you removed the growling lyrics on their songs you could have people that are traditonally not fans of metal(death, progressive, whatever) listen to it and actually describe it as beautiful music. Hell, that pretty much sums up the "Damnation" album.

The way they mix up their singing and musical style captures the sadness and anger emotions that many people have trouble seperating.

I like Metallica alright, but that's about it.

I'll take some Beatles or Zep any day of the week.

You're definitely right. Which ISIS album did you listen to? ISIS are hard to get into at first because of the ice age pace their songs progress to but they're definitely one of my favorites.

Check out these songs by them at least:

1) So Did We
2) Altered Course
3) Ghost Key
4) Garden of Light
5) Dulcinea

If you don't like those I'm afraid they're just not for you, which is cool too :)

I'm not much into death metal, but In Flames is awesome!

I used to love in flames ....
Something happened though ....
their music became disagreeable to my ears around Clayman.
I liked Clayman ... I loved Whoracle to Colony era stuff .... But after Clayman ... the changes just didn't do it for me .... sounded kinda annoying/generic to me after that point ... like the music lost it's character or something .... Ahh well ... just my personal opinion ...

After Forever and Epica are sweet ....

Also, I may as well mention it ... I am one of the Opeth fans here .... I pretty much hold Akerfeldt to a higher regard than any other musician in history, and thus far, he's never disappointed me.

Every geek/nerd I knew in my college dorm liked metal, some a little too much.
You could hear them in their dorm rooms raging out. The doors weren't as soundporoof as they thought.
I honestly expected some shootings sooner or later, but thankfully it never happened.
I enjoy some of it, but not the stuff where you can't even understand the lyrics. (growling, etc)

I really hope you're not classifying In Flames as death metal. I cannot think of a more inappropriate categorization of that band. I used to like them quite a bit about 5 years ago, but their sound has stagnated so badly. I can hardly stand to listen to even a single song anymore. Their new shit sounds so terrible. And Anders' singing voice is so annoying to listen to.

But back to the topic, yes. Death metal (and its many sub genres) for me please.
Top artists right now:

The Berzerker
Arch Enemy
Veil of Maya
Born of Osiris
At The Gates
Carcass
Darkest Hour
Necrophagist
Beneath The Massacre

At The Gates was so fvcking awesome. It's a shame they split up, The Haunted is good, but they don't quite have the same level of aggression in their sound as ATG.

And Carcass was so awesomely creative .. So many grind/deathgrind bands follow in their footsteps, and while many are great, none of em get it as "right" as Carcass .... Amott is a great musician, and I really enjoy his work in Spiritual Beggars as well as Carcass ... (ok, Arch Enemy too ... hehehe)

They started out playing death metal (melodic death metal, to be precise) and later they changed their style to more thrash metal. This pissed off a lot of their old fans but I much prefer the new stuff, as I've never been a fan of death metal in the first place.

Opeth, to me, is an absolutely amazing band that is utterly unlistenable because the death growls are just too annoying.

Yup. I managed to catch At The Gates last summer, and it was probably the best live show I've ever been too. Got to meet all the guys after the show. Had them sign a Swedish flag (that Arch Enemy has also signed). Carcass also did a tour last year, but I wasn't able to catch it. Time, work, and money were too tight, so I had to skip it. I kick myself every time I listen to Carcass.

And don't even get me started on the Amott brothers. No matter how many times I see them live (about 4 now?), or listen to Arch Enemy albums, I am completely blown away again and again by the riffs/songs/solos they write. They are truly blessed musicians.

Well, you can still listen to the album Damnation, it's pretty much all clean vocals....

Also, the song "A Fair Judgement" off of Deliverance. It's classic Opeth where parts of the song are relaxing and soothing, and parts are very heavy .... Pretty much all clean vocals ... and IMO one of the best songs ever. The guitar is just enchanting ....

I love thrash, Kreator, Slayer, Destruction, Megadeth (80s, early 90s), SOD, Overkill, Anthrax (80s, early 90s), etc .... In Flames doesn't really sound thrashy to me

I think it's some kind of "post metal hardcore", and to me it's just kinda staticly and lacking something I can not describe with words. The same thing happened to me with Amorphis .... Karelian Isthmus was good, Tales from the Thousand Lakes was PURE AWESOMENESS, and I thought Elegy was great ..... then ... Tuonella comes out, and it's trying to be more stoner/doom, but really just falls short of being all that great..... Still a decent album, but way below my expectations .... I pretty much lost track of them, but wound up seeing them perform at a show maybe 5 or 6 years ago (I think they were opening for Opeth at one time, or maybe it was for In Flames ... it was a long time ago so I don't really remember who they were opening for), anyhow ... their music just sounded like 25 layers of fuzz .... it wasn't fuzz, like Electric Wizard, which sounds awesome, it was fuzz like .... mushy and and indistinct. I've heard that they've improved in recent years, but I still haven't taken the initiative to give them another chance ....

I like most genres of metal, and usually am kinda open about what I like .... but some things just sound bad to me, and piss me off ....

I listen to a lot of metal.. mostly a fan of the earlier trash stuff. I don't really exhibit the outward appearance of a techie/nerd, though. Most people are surprised when they find out I've got a fairly huge inner nerd, but yeah, really enjoy metal.

Yep, I am a metalhead. Of course, after metal, I also like country, bluegrass, reggae, jazz, oldies, classic rock, polka, klezmer and hip-hop, so what does that say? :p

I'm not really into metal, but I can appreciate some black metal, and folk metal. It gets on my nerves after too long, but the occasional track's ok.

Dissection's last album before the lead singer committed suicide was highly, highly underrated. The songs are incredibly well crafted. These are some of the most metal lyrics I can imagine!

Do any of you know the name of the band that plays heavy music on orchestral strings? It was linked on another forum, and I was too busy to investigate at the time. I now have forgotten the name, and I can't find the previous link.

It wasn't the typical black metal, more like black age music if that makes sense. It was mellow, but heavy at the same time. I /think/ the name started with an "S", but I'm not 100% sure. I'm remembering something like Satyricon, but it's not them of course. The name struck me as being similar, but I could just be remembering wrong.

No I don't like metal. More of a industrial, pop, classical, and rock type of guy.
