Everyone seems to be calling sweet potato's, yams. Being American, I am used to that as well but from what I heard, everywhere else you go, sweet potatos are not called yams.

Oh i first started eating yams from friends of mine who wee from West Africa. Apparently that's where most yams come from. It's very different then sweet potatos of course. Both are starch based but totally different characteristics. I would liken yam closer to a cassava. It's a bit more like a regular potato, a bit creamier IMO. I find them at my local grocery in the ethnic vegetable section where there is cassava, plantains, and other "unusual" foods.

Oh and I love sweet potatos too. I made some last night. Baked wedges on top of an arugula salad with shaved parmigiano reggiano. Good example but not what I made.
