Putnam is a math competition between major universities of the US. It's incredibly difficult. It's much more difficult than the USA Math Olympiad, and can be compariable to the International Math Olympiad. Out of 120 points, the median score in almost all years is 0.
CERN is a high-energy physics research facility in Switzerland. It's still under construction, but parts are operational. When operational in 2007 (?), it will be able to create black holes.
Curtis is probably the best music school in the world. Out of tens of thousands of applicants every year, only one gets accepted. All students are on full scholarship.
Intel STS (Science Talent Search) is a scholarship funded by Intel on high school students that have done outstanding research in a field of science. The winner receives over $200,000 in scholarship money. And all finalists and semi-finalists get to have asteroids named after them.
