Do you like Classic movies?

Modeps

It seems to me that there's a general disdain for classics these days. For some reason many people I know just will not even bother watching them...

Honestly, I cant get enough of the classics... Ben Hur, Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, most of Hitchcock's movies... truely fantastic cinema that everyone needs to see.

Blame it on our attension span. The plots on some of those classic movies are quite well done. But combine that with humor that doesn't ring with today's generations, sometimes horrible acting (overacting or underacting), terrible special effects (if any), and long scenes instead of the quick choppy scenes we are used to and you get a movie that is boring to watch.

Pretty much for anything pre 1970s, I'd rather sit bored doing nothing than watch it.

I hate to say it, but plot isn't everything. I don't play Civilization 1 anymore even though it is a great game. I play Civilization 2 or 3. I don't use the Nintendo, I use the XBox. It doesn't matter how great the games were, graphics and other eye candy means I'd rather have the newer versions. It is addicting. A good plot isn't enough to overcome the addictions we have.

hollywood is too clean cut now. classic movies show real dirt, grime and un-showered-ness.

😕

I would hardly call Hollywood "clean cut" these days.

Im a huge fan of the classics, but I must admit Citizen Kane bored me. The other movies mentioned by the OP however I enjoy watching.

Ah, Ok.
I suppose in most modern films the actors are more "polished" in every scene than in older films.

There are notable exceptions though.

I don't like classic movies just because they are classic. To me gone with the wind falls into that category. I didn't like ben hur. I like most hitchcock, but I will go to my grave insisting that some people and critics overrate his movies due to his profound overall influence on film.

Now billy wilder... that is one guy I truly appreciate. He directed 3 great movies in a row (witness for the prosecution, some like it hot, the apartment)... not many directors can say that.

So you thing GWTW is only classic because its old? The movie won 10 academy awards and was rated #4 on AFI's top 100 movies of the last 100 years. It's a really good movie.

I am a big fan of old comedies.
Especially Jimmy Stewart and Carey Grant.
The timing and dialogue is something that you just don't see in comedies today.

Classics are great, which is the reason I love Turner Classic Movies - they show great movies, and show most of them in the correct aspect ratio. Many if not most movies today rely way too much on the "spectacle" factor (special effects, shock value, etc.). Older movies tended to favor character development, plotting, and style. I'll take the more cerebral approach of older movies any day of the week.

A Christmas Story is not a classic. It's not even 25 years old.
