So? Apple sells more laptops than every other laptop maker besides Dell, HP and Toshiba. You need to differentiate total market to individual companies.

Apple has the highest market value of any high-tech company in the US for a reason.

Those other companies all sell variations of Wintel machines. Apple sells it's own thing.

That's the difference.

Incorrect. You can get a smartphone for free and you can buy a mp3 player at your local drug store.

No you cannot get a smartphone for free. I don't really get your point about buying MP3 players in a drugstore.

I've never had a use for the company or it's products.

- I don't have a use for an MP3 player. (iPod)
- I don't have a use for a laptop or other portable computer. (MBA, MBP, iPad)
- I use our PS3 and my homebuilt PC for TV/Movie viewing. (AppleTV)
- I use my PC for playing games on (iMac)
- I don't have a use for a high speed cell phone. I make phone calls, and play Angry Birds while I'm taking a shit...my $0 Optimus performs both of those functions flawlessly (iPhone)

Technically, I *do* have an iPod somewhere around here. It was given to me as a gift. I played with it for a bit and then realized that I had no use for it. I think one of my kids might have it... ;)

And only three companies sell more laptops than Apple. So, saying Apple is not a player in the laptop market is asinine.

Sure you can, you can get an iPhone 3GS for free for signing a two-year cellular/data contract.

MP3 players being sold at a drug store means it's not an item only for the rich.

Stop trolling, you're horrible at it.

I didn't say they weren't a player.

However to stay relevant Apple had to ditch their more custom approach to the hardware and go with Intel processors. Now you have the situation where people are buying Apple-branded laptops and installing Windows on them.

Sure you can, you can get an iPhone 3GS for free for signing a two-year cellular/data contract.

That is not free.

MP3 players being sold at a drug store means it's not an item only for the rich.

I don't think you quite understand how broad a term 'rich' can be.

Which point is this arguing against by the way?

If that wasn't enough you can check the box score...

What's the point? That selling a pile of devices at dirt cheap doesn't translate to a lot of money. HP was toying with selling off their PC division. Dell has been circling the toilet profit wise for years. Meanwhile Apple while not having a huge slice of the overall pie is sitting on a mountain of money. They produce a product that people want to buy and are able to make good money doing that.

Something that I'm sure Michael Dell and Leo Apotheker could only dream of at this point.

That Apple isn't the only company that caters to the people with disposable income. Stop trolling...

Who on earth argued otherwise?

The point is that Apple's market is primarily rich people with disposable income. Compare them to other tech companies like Microsoft or Intel who don't really have markets any more because they are just a fact of life and are everywhere.

Would you say that a Walkman/Diskman was something catered only to the rich? And I'm not talking about those whacky little optical drive things that Sony put out for a while.

Yes they are. Consumer leisure devices usually are.

You grossly underestimate the disposable income of teenagers, 20 somethings, and a demographic I'll losely label as "urban professionals".

And just people in general. Hell there will be close to 250 million HDTV's sold this year. 1st world countries are overflowing with disposable income to drop on "consumer leisure" devices.

People in 1st world countries are rich, even the poor ones.

Go to the 2nd and 3rd world countries and you won't see Apple anywhere. You will see Microsoft, Intel and others though.

lol. no, they're not. that's the point. companies like apple just make the poor get poorer, because these devices that they 'need' in their daily lives are priced for the rich.

And you can't even make a valid statement without saying that they suck, their products suck, etc. When it's completely untrue.

someone recently said to me that "you don't get wealthy selling to the wealthy, you sell to the poor or those on the cusp"...your post reminded me of that.

I personally don't think teenagers are a good example as they have virtually no responsibilty and are often times funded by their parents.

When I was that age I spend a good deal of money on my car that now wouldn't be a consideration given other expenses.

And many will spend beyond their means for some of these items, especially with tech it seems.

I don't think all Apple items are that bad from a pricing standpoint, not like say Mercedes or something when compared to others, but they aren't inexpensive thats for sure.

On the business side their discounts aren't that good and warranties are somewhat poor

It's funny how much anger people have towards Apple. I love these threads for reminding me of how I used to be. Thank you! :p

No joke. I bet many of these apple haters wouldn't know what the hell we are talking about if we brought up the ATI/Nvdia/3dfx wars from back in the day. It's all so fvcking juvenile now. I think apple has caused droves of common, non tech-savvy people to invade their nerd domains, and it drives them crazy.

How could someone possibly own a smart phone and not know the clock speed of the processor?

WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T CARE??

f^$k $h@t @#$!$!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the iphone, but I pretty much dislike everything else about apple, mostly their business practices and obscene prices, not to mention their obnoxious fans who think everything apple makes is perfection itself.

I'd like an example of the "obscene" prices please...

What is hilarious is that you think you have an unbiased and objective viewpoint. Keep the nerd rage going dude.

I guess apple is now responsible for the demise of the middle class too.
