I don't lend stuff (text books, cd/dvds) out much anymore because either people don't return the item, or they don't respect it and return it looking like its been through the toilet.

I only lend things out that I'd be OK with if they never got returned (because that's what usually happens)

I do, but very very rarely and I only do it for people real close to me. I also make it very clear before even agreeing to lend it to them and handing it to them that if it isn't in the exact condition as I gave it to them as they are buying me a new one.

Haven't had any problems. Only mishap was I lent a friend a CD and he scratched it up a bit. When he returned it to me he handed me a brand new not opened copy of the same CD and said sorry.
My friends all feel the same way, but most of us just buy what we want anyways.

I will bend to peer pressure, but I usually try to weasel my way out of it. Either I don't trust the lendee to return the item, or I know it will come back with an arm and leg missing.

I lent out a physics book that I really like, the guy disappeared and I haven't seen him since.

Every time I have lent someone money or books ect I have always been burned. So no, no more.

I try not to too much. I recently had to implement a no book lending policy after many cherished books of mine have never been returned.

As a general rule, NO.

I've loaned far too many things that never came home.

My neighbor's son (mid-20's)came over one day and wanted to "borrow" my floor jack. I told him, "Sure, with a $1000 deposit."
He left muttering something unpleasant...:D

Another time, he asked if he could borrow a handful of tools. I said, "Sure, with a $1000 deposit."
Once again, he left muttering some undistinguishable words...:D

His dad came over and asked to borrow the floor jack, and I told him sure...just don't let your son use it. He's not responsible enough.
I didn't get the floor jack back for a week, (when I went and asked for it back) even though he said he'd have it back the next day. From now on, HE has to leave a fucking $1000 deposit too! ;)

I've known to lend out my penor every now and then, on conditions that it's used properly and return as found.
