Yes, for downloading, and not wanting to wait for it to boot up every morning.

Yes, one is always using bit torrent, and the other hosts my private little 5 person ventrilo server so that if any of my gaming contacts want to play anything they can hop on it.

Right now, no, because we don't have AC in the house. Normally, all machines are up and running 24/7, crunching whatever project TeAm Anandtech has chose for the month.

How much could you be downloading that it couldn't be finished during the day o_O

And why not just wake up, press the power button, then go do your daily morning routine (shower, brushing teeth, whatnot) and come back and it'll be booted?

My laptop is pretty quiet (X41) but even then I shut it off at night. Takes about a minute to boot so I'm not annoyed enough that I would leave it on all night, unless I'm downloading some huge files.

Back when I had a full tower I had 5 fans going on at the same time (2 PS fans, 2 processor fans, video card fan) at night, and my god, my room sounded like the cockpit of a plane.

A lot. Plus, sometimes the downloads hog too much during the day.

Reason above, still.

My computers are never shut off. I can't remember the last time they were shut off.

I hate rebooting. I typically do it about once every 3 months. When I reboot, I lose everything that I had open... It's a pain in the ass. I know where all the windows are on my taskbar.

Right now, I have 28 FF tabs and 42 windows open, using 1.41gb.

desktop is on all the time, for days and weeks at a time.

In fact, I went to see VeggieFrog in the UK for 2 months and left it running.

The two other desktops are off most of the time, only on when i need to get data off them.

the laptops... they are off most of the time. The one I use daily, I turn off at night, or if I am going to be away for more than a few hours.

I usually leave it on overnight to leech/seed. I also like listening to music while laying in bed, so I'll have Winamp or the FM tuner going. The computer was designed to be quiet and power efficient, so noise and power usage aren't really a problem.

For those who leave it on just because they don't want to wait for it to boot up in the morning, why not just suspend to RAM? Drops power consumption to basically nothing (a few watts, enough to keep the RAM powered) and recovery time is only a few seconds.

Turn it of as it puts out to much heat. Yep powered by Intel. :)

In the winter I will leave it on for the heat. But its getting hot now.

I leave it on all night running a distributed computing program. I like to think it doesn't suck up that much electricity.

Always off at night except for the rare occasion that I'm downloading something. Booting up doesn't bother me, it's only about 30 seconds.

I have an mp3 alarm clock, does that count? I need to change my autoupdate settings, Every Thursday morning I forget that Microsoft updates then, so it affectively shut off my alarm.

I also have it there so people can leave me messages if need be. Think of it as visual voicemail... but without the voice .

EDIT:

This is why I think Microsoft needs to develop a suspended restart sort of thing. Almost like hibernation, but it saves the session so it can be loaded right back up again. This would be hard when it comes to one of the main reason people restart: updating software. But I would love this feature as I hate having to set everything back up. Connection to 5 mIRC servers alone is annoying enough to spend the extra $5-10 a month leaving my PC on.

Because "Sleep" mode shuts off all networking.
